WEBSITE – How to Vet a Charitable Organization Before Donating
Intermediate

[giving]

In this season of giving you may be asked to donate to a charity… or you may consider picking a cause to give to in lieu of gifts.

I remember years ago when my mother-in-law decided to make a donation in my children's name. She picked an organization that purchased goats to provide nourishment to children in an impoverished country. Explaining what that meant to my kiddos was a valuable lesson in giving.

But with so many charities out there, how do you know where your dollars will actually be going?

Good news! The homework has already been done for you. There are a handful of reputable organizations that provide detailed information about non-profits so that you can make an informed donation.

When you're getting ready to make a contribution, it's a good idea to get a little background information from an impartial source. These websites make it easy to plug-in a name and get an instant rating and background details to find out how they will use your donation.

These websites look at the organization's governance, effectiveness, finances, etc. and provide information like:

· Detailed ratings for top charities
· Tips to help you donate with confidence
· Background information so that you can see facts like how much they pay their executives
· Information on immediate needs (like hurricane relief or the California wildfires)
· Listings of charities by cause... such as animals, literacy, veterans

For example, I have family in Santa Rosa and Paradise, CA where wildfires have devastated the area. When looking on CharityNavigator.org<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001C3IEDc9YZb8ilsojbrds0DVjCcVZ8NzAKvQFr3FQc5Gx7GsOxw2GioJZHi1ZEG4ZZQQJUxgENoa8dxb80bSsW6klE1sW8KX4s1KjCE7GUZMFzV1mMN5f9eBCiBJnEtKtbe_Zv4brNKGgpWbNbb2Kfq9xzHkjaEov&c=gxR-DJgRs3zvJBvMDAiMHEfHrbh5TCyE6x-ZoWlh_dNOyANEq3AIEA==&ch=S2G6c8o6fb4bGBEGyRDd72fjYLw7dNnuWs72QoVKAgnRx9U929vP1g==> to find an organization to donate to, I checked out their Advisories List<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001C3IEDc9YZb8ilsojbrds0DVjCcVZ8NzAKvQFr3FQc5Gx7GsOxw2GioJZHi1ZEG4ZzD6m5jarfatJpUMGw7BRlKJko4qv5obBB_487Zt_2-oTp5A1mBpq9rrMAZNihzg4KjpP-LFItoruJPkp87ZJu6mJ558RRYTaA3CdBhpK0s4orczK55QSGocr0i5vIJUhrWfxZk_O-Gk=&c=gxR-DJgRs3zvJBvMDAiMHEfHrbh5TCyE6x-ZoWlh_dNOyANEq3AIEA==&ch=S2G6c8o6fb4bGBEGyRDd72fjYLw7dNnuWs72QoVKAgnRx9U929vP1g==>. Here the organizations are grouped by Low, Medium and High Concern. I found that a well-known entity in Santa Rosa was of "High" concern due to embezzlement. Eeeks!

Fortunately, I was able to use the site to find a Wildfires Recovery Fund where I could confidently send a contribution.

So if you're thinking of making donations as the year comes to a close or as a gift for someone, spending a few minutes in one of these watchdog sites will give you peace of mind.

Communications: Building Trust
Use the Person's Name

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and they used your name a few times? It makes you feel like they're really paying attention to you, doesn't it?

This technique (using a person's name) also works well when you're calling a company's customer service or tech support. These folks usually identify themselves giving you their first name when they answer your call.

· Jot it down so you don't forget it.

· Then use his or her name as you speak because it helps to personalize the conversation. And they can be more receptive to your request.

· Be sure to end the conversation by re-stating their name -- "Thank you for refunding my purchase, Greg, I appreciate it."

You can also use this technique when being introduced to someone new. Using their name a few times in the conversation helps you to remember it.

An added benefit of using someone's name often in a conversation is that it provides positive energy. They feel that you are listening and have heard them.
