PPT - Portrait & Landscape Views in the Same Presentation

Have you ever created a PowerPoint presentation and wanted to use both portrait and landscape views to better display your information?

Typically, a presentation is set up in the landscape mode, but you may want to change just ONE or TWO slides to portrait layout.
You could have content that looks better in a vertical view, like:
· A Picture or Drawing
· A Chart or Graph
· Information in a Table
Some content just lends itself to portrait mode.
However, in PowerPoint, when you change from portrait to landscape -- ALL the slides are reshaped. Only one of these modes may be used at a time… you can't have both portrait and landscape pages in the same file as you can in a Word document (see the tip on changing page orientations in Word here<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001TlDgdni6WKsmW5buodekKbvTpHEtyOozSaIKOgPzFtIRo-mI9JbPNZVcamhjL0sLWohrp4cePFUydG4QP93I7JuT-32z_BFP6cbG8CV-c0tMAF9yi4oX00dJc_Q92Jepbuz3rW0fpzR46AXdSn1SFqzE6xys6WzIsDR7DrokL87sNAB8L5PzI38VMdCZ4E3wNftkaK77EHYdMHQrqhmPhM9E381zvJ0d&c=yfEs74GO7IOdTcV-7hMm4IJF8GVw_vPoCGESSgO_DIW_MDhFWRdMhg==&ch=xD_-Y6W19-DOR8WYshBtR2trgEphlJGg9aj1MNQHFu5whz_Id1JdrA==>).
However, there is a secret workaround that lets you create what looks like one presentation with both slide types, but it is actually two presentations linked together!
Set Up Your Presentations
To create a presentation that will display both portrait and landscape views, you will first need to:

· Create two separate presentations. One will contain all of the slides in landscape view – and the other will have all of the portrait slides.
· Then save the two files in the same folder (so that if you move them around later, the linking will still work).
Decide which will be the primary file. This is the one that contains the first slide that will be shown in your presentation. What you will essentially be doing is putting "links" from the primary presentation to slides in the secondary one. Your audience won't know the difference!
Link the Presentations
When you have your slides ready in both presentations, you will need to "link" them. You can go back and forth from one file to the other by creating action links in the documents:

· STEP 1: At the location in your first presentation (we'll call it the Landscape one), where you want to jump over to a slide in the other (Portrait) presentation, you need to create a place where you can "click on" or "mouse over" that is a trigger to go to a slide in your Portrait file. You can: type a word on the page like "next slide", add an image, or an object. These are the items that you will add a hyperlink in to jump to the other presentation.

· STEP 2: Select that text, image or object with your mouse … and on the Insert tab … in the Links section, click on the Action icon.
· STEP 3: The Action Settings box will open. You can either choose the Mouse Click tab if you want to be able to click on the trigger item to jump to the next slide, or the Mouse Over tab if you simply want to slide your mouse over the trigger point to move to the next slide.
· STEP 4: On either tab, check the Hyperlink to option.
· STEP 5: Then use the drop-down menu select "Other PowerPoint Presentation" to select your other presentation.
· STEP 6: A window will open so that you can choose the slide you would like to jump to in the other presentation. Click OK … and OK again … to complete the linking.

Now when you run your presentation and you get to the slide with the "trigger link" to jump to the other presentation, click on the link (or mouse over it), and you will be taken to the other presentation seamlessly.
TIP: It's best to use the same template design in each presentation when possible so that it appears to be the same one.
Return to First Presentation
To jump back to the first (Landscape) presentation from the second (Portrait) one, follow the same steps in creating a link in your slide, by starting with Step 1 above and completing each step.
You can use this method to "jump" back and forth multiple times in your presentation by creating links from one to the other so that you can interweave landscape and portrait slide views.
Google Slides
Here's where Google has not kept up. At the time of this writing, you can change a slide from Landscape to Portrait layout by going to File, Page setup ... but ALL slides will contain that layout. We tried the linking trick as described for PowerPoint above, but it did not work.

Switch Up Your Verbs ... Be More Effective
No matter what you're writing (a monthly status report, a grant proposal, a resume) there are frequent instances where you have to tell what you did.
That often means starting with a verb.
Because verbs convey the action you've done, they can be very powerful ... or ordinary, conventional, expected.
Here's an online resource that offers you 185 strong verbs you can use ... sorted out by a number of different situations. (Yes, this site focuses on resumes, but think much more broadly. Action verbs are needed everywhere.)
