WINDOWS - Using Windows + Tab With Multiple Monitors
Intermediate

I usually work with many apps open on multiple monitors – Word docs, email, a graphics program ... plus a few Internet browser windows. I used to use the shortcut Alt + Tab to quickly toggle between open applications (see more about this function in this Tech-Talk article<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YVW431rzIO8ZAoCRGfEWrg93CPFyvMByhwtC8kLa_5H2mDDLigaJrgV-awjuypkwkO99P8Uddkmk-sPN9p-mfljc_Vsgw0NomLk7ggxrqfALzX4V5FrlAIgEFeAY95sDyI1XKgB5gtM_uQ6gWkvL48-dnawX1_DMnM_hrCZtKYdU-tNPYed4aTnfiQT-IG7P&c=4MAmnRL4xou8TuyZhz1UTg5a4svXxTOxySKbG6H155Pgx7cyQ2nmyQ==&ch=r9s8lwYAA1kNz27q2cNM98iVNxFecOuDw0K7w2eyTdt232Dfk09dTQ==>), but...

[Windows plus tab key]

I found a similar shortcut that works better – when I'm working on multiple monitors.

Microsoft has recently updated this shortcut. Now when you enter the Windows Key + Tab, you will go to the "Task" view. It looks a bit similar to Alt + Tab initially, but there are a few advantages of this technique when working with multiple monitors.

Windows Key + Tab displays a thumbnail of each of your open apps / programs / browsers, etc.... And the best part is, if you work with more than one computer monitor, the thumbnail for each open app is displayed on the corresponding monitor. This makes it much faster to find a specific program you want!

For instance, in this image below, you see three different monitors. After pressing Windows + Tab, each app that is open is showing in thumbnail version on the monitor with that document is displayed on. Click on the one you want!

[multiple monitors]

Try it! Hold down the Windows Key and then press Tab - once. NOTE: Unlike Alt + Tab you don't keep tabbing ... you release the keys and the images stay. Then you click on the document or the thumbnail on the monitor that you want.

How is Windows + Tab Useful?

· This shortcut will display a thumbnail version all of the currently active apps/programs so you can find what you need quickly.

· When you release the Windows + Tab keys, you can either move your mouse or use the arrow keys to select the app you want to navigate to.

· Wait, there's more! You can move your mouse and click on the timeline vertical bar on the right side of the screen. Scroll down the bar and you will see documents, programs or Internet browser windows that you have worked on in the past several days. They don't have to be currently open. It's a quick way to retrieve a file or go to a website page that you were using in the past few days… or weeks.

· TIP: When looking for a previously used document, it may be easier to remember when you worked on it last rather than where you saved it!

New Desktop

After clicking Windows + Tab, you can also choose the "New Desktop +" button to create a special kind of "faux" or virtual desktop. This can be handy when working on a project where you want to cluster all of the documents and files for it together. See more on virtual desktops in this Tech-Talk article<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YVW431rzIO8ZAoCRGfEWrg93CPFyvMByhwtC8kLa_5H2mDDLigaJrhWU6zeK5M_J69KceLt7Oro76f4kBRFBKpCR2NHgJY2GQs2EIXdC1w1J6apgtvEY3uttu9sPMwscVtiTBvH08255jYZ3gDMKK5RIiw9t9PZmYAUGN1MFsf_il_AbigF1LCL01CCl8A-mDJgAw3EYfQ4=&c=4MAmnRL4xou8TuyZhz1UTg5a4svXxTOxySKbG6H155Pgx7cyQ2nmyQ==&ch=r9s8lwYAA1kNz27q2cNM98iVNxFecOuDw0K7w2eyTdt232Dfk09dTQ==>.

Communicating: Email, Text, Voice
Watch your "I's"

If you want to convince others of something that's important to you ... limit the number of times you say "I".

"I want you to hold this event..."
"I need to get this done by ..."
"I like to be on time because..."

When more of your communications use fewer "I's" you're more likely to get people's cooperation and support. Let's see one way we could switch up our examples so that we aren't starting with the ego-focused "I."

"Holding this event will be good for the organization
and a bonus on your performance report."

"Getting this done by noon tomorrow will put us in a good position."

"Being on time makes everything run more smoothly."

There are a zillion ways to minimize "I's" if you're on the lookout! One keen way to reposition the idea is to add a benefit, right? Then you're accomplishing two important communication elements in one fell swoop!

Leadership
Frustration tolerance

I ran across an interesting thought in something I was reading and wanted to share it with you. It's a perspective on frustration -- and tolerating it. The concept was new to me.

Here it is...

"Building frustration tolerance allows us to see that frustration is a normal part of life [and work]. And that is often a great reminder of how hard you are working toward your goals!"

In some ways, you might think this is just "the glass is half full" thinking. But remember that frequently when you're feeling frustrated, it's because you're trying so hard to accomplish something that's important to you. And that's a good thing!

So maybe we should be more tolerant (and actually embrace) frustrating work situations and see them as making progress. We're moving towards something we want to happen (or we wouldn't care and we wouldn't be frustrated.)
