WINDOWS - Add a "Halo" Around Your Cursor for More Visibility
Intermediate

[mouse halo]

Have you ever been presenting online or projecting your computer screen on a monitor for a training ... just to discover that your audience can't really see what you're doing with your mouse?

Or maybe you work on multiple monitors and just want to view or find your own mouse a little more easily.

Well, you can add a "halo" around your cursor – a transparent highlighted circle… so that people (and you) can see where and what you are clicking on.

[mouse properties]

Unfortunately, when you go to the Mouse Properties on your computer, Windows has many different cursor "schemes," but it doesn't have an option for a "halo" effect. That's okay! We found that all you need to do is load a "cursor file image" to your computer.

You see, your mouse arrow pointer is really just a picture. So, we can import an image and tell Windows through your Mouse Properties to use it. It's kind of like when you add a new font to your computer, it's just a set of images. The best part is, that there's no software to install.

Create a Halo Mouse

First, we need to find a halo mouse image and upload it to the cursor files folder in Windows. This looks like a lot of steps below, but you only need to do this once.

There are several sites that offer cursor image options, but we're recommending RealWorld Graphics because we think this is the best choice.

http://www.rw-designer.com<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001h6Q6ajACf2ydr2ln_Ta62zWQXg-e15Uf1u-PCNRKOD6AnIwwoQI4AtuHGuNSxSOQIBIXCM_dBlrijWMKJhj39HGYtDFQTASf0EkNpbbxSeHm5zgJhObMTIzxr7ekX9-o2Tsdne2oqY_KJXzZnUW4Bg%3D%3D%26c%3D0yvCm6w9qnYMbVoNL4Akg7en07vipYkAXYiWADqHZYfVtTGQRd4YmQ%3D%3D%26ch%3Dm35W6nKInZwr_g69lBxE3o8Ry1uPmzkgfTOOuqedHjyIryS7cqR4ig%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C268604bf683345f3c2c708da4e4cb7d1%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C637908388652281859%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ZwQorAmmA4LYCM3yuW9DMUKcOStIF2ZrAOeg1D9CgLI%3D&reserved=0>

NOTE: Frankly, this site looks very basic and old, yet it is tried and true… and it is a tool that is vetted by a Microsoft source. Plus there are no bothersome ads!

You'll also find a "cursor-builder" on the site, where you can create your own. However, the Gallery contains hundreds of choices that are ready to use.

Cursors can come in "sets" (as in the image below) so that you have different options for various types of pointer effects such as having the cursor turn into crosshairs or a vertical bar.

[cursor set]

Or, for simplicity, you can choose to download a single cursor with the basic arrow. That's what we're going to do here.

Either way, cursor images are a .cur file type – tiny little files that you save to your Windows cursor subfolder.

Step 1: Find and Download a Cursor to Your Computer

· Start at http://www.rw-designer.com<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001h6Q6ajACf2ydr2ln_Ta62zWQXg-e15Uf1u-PCNRKOD6AnIwwoQI4AtuHGuNSxSOQIBIXCM_dBlrijWMKJhj39HGYtDFQTASf0EkNpbbxSeHm5zgJhObMTIzxr7ekX9-o2Tsdne2oqY_KJXzZnUW4Bg%3D%3D%26c%3D0yvCm6w9qnYMbVoNL4Akg7en07vipYkAXYiWADqHZYfVtTGQRd4YmQ%3D%3D%26ch%3Dm35W6nKInZwr_g69lBxE3o8Ry1uPmzkgfTOOuqedHjyIryS7cqR4ig%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C268604bf683345f3c2c708da4e4cb7d1%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C637908388652281859%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ZwQorAmmA4LYCM3yuW9DMUKcOStIF2ZrAOeg1D9CgLI%3D&reserved=0> and click on the Gallery tab.

· In the search bar key in "cursor highlight" and press Search.

· On the next screen, use the "order by" dropdown to select Downloads.

· To keep it simple, we're going to select a single cursor file – the one called yellow highlight.cur

· Click on the cursor image to go to the download page.

[download cursor file]

· Then click the Download button to save it to your computer.

· You can save it to a folder or your desktop. Then we'll move it to the folder that contains all of your other mouse cursor files on your computer.

· Once downloaded, either drag and drop, or copy and paste the .cur file to where Windows is installed. Typically, you will go to Windows (C:), then Windows, and next find the file named Cursors (you'll see other .cur files there as well).

[save the file]

· After you move the file to this folder, a permissions pop-up will open because you are modifying a setting in Windows. Just click Continue in the box to save the file.

[mouse settings]

Step 2: Activate Your New Cursor File

Now, to enable the "halo" cursor, you need to tell Windows to turn it ON in the Mouse Settings.

· In the search bar at the bottom of the screen, type in Mouse Settings and select it from the list.

· In the Mouse window, click on the link in the right column that says Additional mouse options.

[mouse settings options]

· In the Mouse Properties box, click on the Pointers tab. You'll see that when you're using your default mouse, under Scheme it will show (None); and under Customize it will show Normal Select (as in the image below).

[mouse settings]

To create a Scheme for your new "halo" cursor:

· In the Mouse Properties box, under Customize, highlight the Normal Select Cursor.
· Then click the Browse button and go to the file where it is saved (Windows (C:) file, then Windows, Cursors) and select the file, then click Open.
· Now you'll see the Normal Select is the new halo cursor.

We need to Name the new cursor to differentiate it from the default normal file so that we can select it going forward. To save it as a Scheme:

1. In the Customize box, highlight the Normal Select option.
2. Click the Save As button.
3. In the pop-up window give the halo cursor a name that you will recognize.
4. Click OK.

[steps]

· Now you'll see that in the Scheme window your new mouse is selected. At the bottom of the Mouse Pointers box, click Apply to start using it.

Step 3: Switch Back and Forth

Now that you've created and started to use your new mouse, you may want to switch back and forth from the default mouse to your new one. To toggle your mouse to the new cursor, or back to the normal one:

· Go back to the Mouse Settings box (type mouse settings in the search bar, click the Additional mouse options in the right column)
· In the Pointers tab, use the drop-down under Scheme and select (None) for the default mouse or select your new halo Scheme.
· Click Apply to close out the window.

Communications: Email
Give a "heads up" request

I imagine you can think of times when you've sent an email, needing a quick response, and you didn't get it ... at least not in a timely manner, right?

When you find yourself having a particular desire to get an answer, and you don't want your request to get lost or delayed, add the request in the subject. Here are some examples:

"Response Needed: Program Changes"

"Response requested: Program changes"

"Respond by Sat: Program changes"

Maybe you don't need a response, but the material is very important and needs to be viewed immediately. In that case you might say something like:

"Read This: Program changes"

"Read Pls: Program changes"

"Read Now: Program changes"

You get the idea! Use your own words to tell them what you need.

Leadership
Leading productive meetings

Meetings should be useful business tools. Certainly they should not be boring requirements nor a waste of time!

Every day, in the United States alone, between 11 million and 13 million business meetings are held.

To make its own meetings more effective, 3M Corporation identified seven deadly sins of meeting leaders:

Don't...
· Arrive unprepared
· Resent questions
· Play the comic
· Chastise someone in front of others
· Permit interruptions
· Lose control
· Monopolize the meeting

TIP: Before you start rating others on this list, look inward. In what areas could you improve ... as either the leader or the participant?
