SOCIAL MEDIA - A NEW, Highly Effective Way to Use Pinterest
Intermediate
[Pinterest]
It's time to do a major shift in your thinking about Pinterest! If you tried it before and it didn't work, give it another look with the approach listed below.
You probably know that this social media platform is a great place to sell things. But did you realize that you can turn Pinterest into a powerful traffic driver to your website and programs – super easily, very quickly and longer lasting than any other social media platform?
That's right! Few people realize the magnitude of potential they can achieve by using Pinterest for their organization's success ... if they use the tips we have in this article and the upcoming webinar (June 22, 2022).
This "sleeper" web tool can be a powerful site for driving traffic to your programs, events and web pages. The trick is in knowing what types of Pins work best. (TIP: There are only two).
When you couple that knowledge with the fact that Pins continue to grab people's attention for years, instead of the fleeting nature of all the other social media platforms, you have a winner.
Of course we all know that posting something on most social media sites is fleeting. If a person doesn't see it quickly, it moves out of visibility. Also, some platforms like Facebook only show your posts to a portion of your followers, and then just until something else comes along.
With Pinterest, you have much greater visibility and a lasting presence. Here are some industry stats that may surprise you. NOTE: Half-life here means "the point at which your post has received 50% of all the attention it's going to get."
· Twitter Tweets last from 20 seconds to two days. The half-life is 24 minutes.
· Facebook Posts last from a few hours to two days. The half-life is 90 minutes.
· Pinterest Pins last for more than two (2) years! Still driving traffic, day after day. The half-life of a Pinterest Pin was 3.5 months; now, in 2022, it is considered to be six (6) months!
Studies have shown that well over 70% of Pins are actually "re-pinned" from other accounts. So once your Pin is in the stream, it can be shared indefinitely and really go viral.

How to Capitalize on Pinterest
Here are the basic steps of what you need to do to create a Pinterest account that starts driving traffic to your website.
1. Create a business account in Pinterest. It's very simple to set up a business account. You simply need an email address that is not used elsewhere in Pinterest - or you can convert a personal account into business.
TIP: Choose a generic or shared email address for the organization,
one that anyone can use rather than tying it to one specific individual.
For example: register at publiclibrary.org<mailto:register at publiclibrary.org> or training at abcuniversity.edu<mailto:training at abcuniversity.edu>.
2. Define your Boards. To begin with, it is recommended that you create 10 – 15 Boards. These are topics of interest … that match up to the information you have on your website including blogs and ongoing programs. You can create boards around the resources and activities you want to emphasize such as Young Adult, Senior Programs, Crafting, Tech-Help … whatever you have available and want to bring to people's attention.
3. Determine keywords. You'll use keywords in lots of places from your Pin and Board titles to the descriptions and even your profile. You can get suggestions by seeing what comes up when you do a search within Pinterest in the Tag area.
4. Post two types of Pins: Quote-Graphics and Tip-o-Graphics
1. Quote-Graphics
· A quote that is related to what you're promoting
· In a style that is: Inspirational, Motivational, or Funny
[quote post]
2. Tip-o-Graphics.
· A list of 5 - 20 tips
· In a tall, thin graphic
· Good to feature a book cover or a person's image
[Tip-o-graphics]
Great Ideas to Use
The shape of viral Pinterest graphics is quite specific.
· Size: 1000 x 1500 pixels
· Concept: Think the size and shape of a wide bookmark!
Leverage your books and other media as sources / connections to what you want to promote.
· Select ideas from your books, media, programs.
· Add URL links to where on the web you want people to go.
· Option: Add a picture of a related book or media cover if you have a license to do so. If using a book cover or packaging, use the same colors in the Pin.
Create Boards and Pins around hot interests for the public – their needs vs. focused on what you have. Identify problems, hot topics … then work them into the Boards and Pins, using your resources.

Communications: Writing and Talking
"Isn't it obvious?" (No!)
Whenever we write something or talk to folks, it's a given that we'd like them to buy into what we have to say, right? That's only natural.
It's also feels, in many cases, that the reason we are saying what we're saying is obvious. We think the benefit of our ideas are known to all and therefore don't have to be spoken (or written).
Hummm, do we think correctly? Which set of statements do you believe is more compelling?
Set One
· "We're trying to figure out how to fix the 'reply to' function."
· "Be sure to log out of the Tech-Talk account before going into Admin."
· "It's good to drink 10 glasses of water each day."
Set Two
· "We're trying to figure out how to fix the 'reply to' function so that we won't miss any more emails."
· Be sure to log out of the Tech-Talk account before going into Admin so you won't have trouble getting in."
· "It's good to drink 10 glasses of water each day so that your organs stay hydrated and can function well."
The Lesson: When you write emails or a report, go back and see where you can add the "so that" ... the benefit, the reason you made the statement. It will make your writing much more compelling.

Leadership
Working Backwards
Yes, sometimes, working backwards is quite helpful. Why? Because you have the end in mind. You know what your ultimate goal is, so you are more efficient in how you get there.
So, whether it's a new program, a large report or a celebration, working backwards can be a useful strategy.
This idea is often called backward planning, backward goal-setting, or backward design, and apparently, it's used quite often in education and training. The idea is to start with your ultimate objective, your end goal, and then work backward from there to develop your plan.
Create Pinterest Boards Working Backwards
An excellent time to use the working backwards approach is setting up Pinterest Boards. You first need to figure out the goal, the end result that you want. For example, with a Shared Results International Board I want management consultants to discover my Egalitarian Leadership products (assessments, coaching, courses) so they will purchase them.
With that goal in mind, I can work backwards to identify what quotes or tips would make them want to click on the Pin. Maybe I create something with a quote that tells the value of having satisfaction metrics, or how having a coach is the secret to success.
With this kind of information and connection, you can see how much more quickly you can put together a simple Pin that brings traffic to the action you want people to take.
Other Variations of This Approach
One of the most effective uses of working backwards for me, is when practicing a piece of music. As a flutist, I often find myself having to learn a challenging section in a very short period of time. So, what I do is start at the very end, and play the last phrase at least three times, or until I have it just right. Then I add the second to last phrase and play both of them. And so it goes. This method means I keep hearing the "goal" (the resolution) over and over. I firmly understand, musically, what I'm trying to achieve. This type of practicing (working backwards) cuts my practice time significantly! You can do the same with a project.
OK, you may shudder when I tell you this example of working backwards: I sometimes jump to the end of a book I am reading to read the last page. Then the second to last; followed by the third to the last. Why? Because I like to see how the story evolves, knowing how it is ending.
And when it comes to a non-fiction book, when I need to get the content into my brain quickly and efficiently, I'll jump to the last chapter and work backwards. Our brain is wired to be quite efficient, knowing the end goal.
