MOBILE: Organize Your Pictures with Albums (& Folders)
Intermediate
[images]
Is your phone full of images? You may have an assortment of vacation photos, pictures of friends, family, and pets ... and a bunch of screenshots (which you may need only for a short time).
With a large assortment of images stored on your phone, wouldn't it be nice to have a way to organize them as you do with files on your computer?
Well, if you have an iPhone, with the Photos app, you can create Albums and then organize them with Folders (multiple Albums can be in one Folder).
With an Android device, you can create Albums in the Google Photos app.
Let's look at how to use both of these apps to organize pictures on your mobile device.

TIP: Join the webinar! If your phone is overflowing with images and you need help moving them to another location, register to attend our upcoming session, How to Organize and Move Photos from your Phone to your Computer on Wednesday, May 17th at 3 pm ET. iPhone: Creating Albums (and Folders)
[media type]
When you take a picture with your iPhone it lands in your Photos app in the "Recents" Album. Also, based on the photo type, your iPhone will automatically organize images by People & Places, or media type: Selfies, Live Photos, Screenshots, and more.
To help find images in the future, you can create your own Albums that contain collections of photos based on the subject matter ... family photos or a vacation, for example.
Additionally, you can create a Folder that contains multiple Albums within it for better organization – just like you do on your computer. However, Folders are just a holding place for Albums, images don't go into the Folder, they are saved only in Albums.
TIP: If you want a Folder, you should create it first ... although there is a workaround if you already have Albums that you want to be in a Folder. See directions below in this article.
Create an Album
If you want to create a new Album that's not going into a Folder:
· Tap the Photos app (not the Camera), then Albums in the lower menu.
· In the Albums tab, tap the Plus icon at the top.
[new album]
· Then choose New Album and give it a Name and Save.
· The new Album will be added to your My Albums section.
· Your Photos window will open so that you can select the images you want to add to that Album, and/or use the Search bar to look for pictures to be added (more on using Search below).
[select images]
Create a Folder with Albums in it
You may want several Albums to be organized within a Folder. For example, let's say you want to keep "vacation" images together. You can create a Vacation Folder and within it, there are several Albums, one for each trip (Caribbean Cruise, New Orleans, Skiing in Colorado, etc…).
You need to create the Folder first, and then the Albums that go inside it.
NOTE: Again, the Folder is just a holding place for Albums. Images don't go into the Folder, they are saved only in Albums.
[new folder]
· From the main Albums screen, tap the Plus icon in the upper left corner, then New Folder.
· Give it a Name and Save.
Next, add an Album to that Folder:
1. From the main Album screen, tap the Folder to open it.
2. Click Edit in the upper right.
3. Then press the Plus icon in the upper left corner.
4. This time select New Album. Give it a Name and tap Save.
[folders]
Again, your Photos window will open so that you can tap on the media you want to add to that Album, and/or use the Search bar to look for images to be added.
Workaround to Move an Album into a Folder
NOTE: If you already have an Album and want to move it into a Folder, there's no direct option. Here's a workaround:
· In your Folder, create a new Album (even though you already have one) from the steps above.
· In the screen that lets you select images to add, press Album from the toggle at the top and tap on the one you want to move to your Folder.
· Choose all of the images in the Album and tap Add, and then Done.
· Be sure to go back and delete the original Album if you don't want to have duplicates.
Use the Search Feature to Find Images
There are also ways to find images in bulk to add to Albums using the Search tool. Every time you take a picture (or screenshot) the Photos app adds metadata (words that describe the image) to your picture automatically. It scans the image and can detect faces, as well as items like "food," "trees," "wedding," etc… And if you have Location Services turned on, that is detected as well.
[snow]
When you are adding Albums and selecting images, type a word or two in the Search bar to let the Photos app find pictures for you.
Or, use the Search icon in the bottom of any of the Photos app screens to type in keywords, a name, or location to quickly find images.
For example, we typed in "snow" in the image to the left and located 150 images with snow in them!
Android: Creating Albums
[Google Photos]
Typically, the Google Photos app is automatically installed on Android devices (if not, you can download it from Google Play). In addition, you can sync it to your Google account so there is a backup saved online.
TIP: To check and see if the syncing is activated, open the Google Photos app, then tap your account photo in the upper right and select Photos settings. At the Settings screen, tap the setting for Back Up & Sync. Toggle ON the option for Back Up & Sync (if it's not already enabled) and review the settings with backup choices (like file upload size).
[library]
These instructions may vary depending on your device.
NOTE: Like the iPhone Photos app, Google Photos lets you create Albums, but it does not have Folders.
Open the Google Photos app and tap the Library icon on the bottom toolbar.
1. Tap New Album.
2. Give it a Title.
3. Tap the button to Select Photos.
4. Scroll through your gallery and tap the images you want to add to the new Album and click Add in the upper right when complete.
[select images]
[search options]
TIP: The Search option is a very powerful way to find pictures. In the Google Photos app, tap on the Search icon in the lower bar. Then type keywords or a date to narrow in on images you want to move to an Album.
Or, the Google Photos app has pre-determined Categories to choose from like Screenshots, Selfies and more to find images.
When you take new pictures in the future that you want to add, go to the Album and tap the Add Photos icon at the top, select the new photos, and then tap Add.

Never give up!
Everyone has times when they just want to give up, right? Well, you may not think you have someone to tell you to hang on ... it will get better. But you do! You have yourself!
Here's a quote that is more than motivational ... it's true. Remember it and remind yourself of it for those days that get especially tough.
"When you get into a tight place
and everything goes against you,
till it seems as though you could
not hang on a minute longer,
never give up then ...
for it is just the place and time
that the tide will turn."
~ Harriet Beecher Stowe
