WORD – Turn Off Mini Toolbar That Can Get in the Way
Novice
Microsoft continues to make changes to help users work more productively. Most of the time these upgrades are helpful. But for some people, they can be frustrating.
For example, say you're editing text in a Word document, and you double-click to highlight a word (or triple-click to highlight a block of text). All of a sudden, a formatting toolbar pops up.
[A screenshot of a text editing software with a toolbar highlighted in red. The toolbar includes options for text formatting, font type and size, paragraph alignment, line spacing, and adding comments. Text in the document explains the functionality of the mini toolbar.]
Now, this is meant to be helpful by having editing options right near where you're working. But it can be annoying as sometimes it hides text you're making changes to… getting in the way. TIP: It does disappear when you move your mouse away from that area.
This mini toolbar was designed to give quick access to formatting options like changing fonts, indents or bullets and also shows up in desktop Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
The good news is that if you want to disable the mini toolbar in these desktop programs, you can!
NOTE: When you're working in WEB versions, there is a slimmed-down mini toolbar, but you cannot turn it off.
By the Way: In Google Docs, a similar formatting toolbar does not appear when you click on a word or section of text. However, what DOES pop up on the right side of the document (not covering text) are choices to add a Comment, Reaction or Suggested Edits.
[A text document with the heading "What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT". The highlighted phrase "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" appears in the first sentence. Three comment icons are visible on the right margin of the document.]
Turn Off the Mini Toolbar
It's easy to turn this feature off so that the mini toolbar won't be displayed when you highlight text. You do need to disable it individually in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In each of these apps...
· In the ribbon go to File, then Options.
· In the General tab UN-check the Show Mini Toolbar on selection.
· Click OK to save.
[Screenshot of Microsoft Word Options menu. The General tab is selected on the left. The "Show Mini Toolbar on selection" checkbox is highlighted with a red rectangle.]
TIP: When the mini toolbar is disabled, and text or objects are highlighted, you can still right-click and get to most of the options quickly.

Communication: Writing
Complimentary vs. complementary
Oh my, what a difference a little "i" vs. "e" can do! Yes, it changes the whole meaning of the word.
When we are talking, no one notices if we are saying "complimentary" or "complementary" because the sound the same.
It gets trickier when we're writing. Then, in order to be correct, we need to know when to use an "e" and when to use an "i". Are we talking about complementary or complimentary.
Complimentary means something given for free or as a courtesy. It can also be expressing praise or admiration. (When you think about it, praise is free too, right?)
Examples:
· "We received complimentary drinks at the event."
· "She gave him a complimentary remark about his work."
Complementary refers to things that go well together or complete each other.
Examples:
· "The colors of the room are complementary, creating a harmonious look."
· "Their skills are complementary; they make a great team."
