Hi,

The Oregon Department of Education is looking for more schools, tribes, and community organizations to provide summer meal sites. Details are in the news release below. This from the announcement caught my eye: “As an incentive, state grant funds are available<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/childnutrition/cacfp/Pages/SpecialGrants.aspx> up to $20,000 per sponsor to startup or expand summer meal programs.” Two documents on the linked website – Sample Grant<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/childnutrition/cacfp/Documents/Att%20C%20Sample%20Grant.pdf> (p. 14) and Uses of Funds<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/childnutrition/cacfp/Documents/Att%20D%20Uses%20of%20Funds.pdf> (p. 2) – indicate that grant funds can be used for activities to incentivize students/youth to participate. The latter includes this:

B. Enrichment and Educational Activities Equipment and Supplies
The purchases of items used to add enrichment and educational activities to encourage children to participate in the meals and/or snacks programs.
Examples of eligible expenses include, but are not limited to:
o Guest speaker;
o Arts and crafts materials such as paint brushes, paint and glitter;
o Robotics equipment such as tools, parts, and wiring;
o Gardening supplies such as tools, soil, and seeds; and
o Books.
If you are interested in participating, this may be a way to fund some children’s and young adult books or STEM equipment for a library and to offer library time (storytime, activities, checkout) during summer meal hours.

This is from the announcement: “For questions about grant funds and more information about how your organization can become a Summer Food Service Program sponsor, please contact ode.communitynutrition at ode.oregon.gov<mailto:ode.communitynutrition at ode.oregon.gov>. The deadline to submit an eligibility assessment to become a Summer Food Service Sponsor is March 1, 2024.”

Cheers,

More Schools, Community Organizations Sought for Summer Food Service Program

Grant funds of up to $20,000 are available to startup or expand summer meal programs for children and teens. Eligibility assessments are due by March 1, 2024.

(Salem, OR) – The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is seeking more schools, community organizations and tribes to participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) this summer to help ensure that children and teens receive the nutritious meals they need during the summer months. As an incentive, state grant funds are available<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm9yZWdvbi5nb3Yvb2RlL3N0dWRlbnRzLWFuZC1mYW1pbHkvY2hpbGRudXRyaXRpb24vY2FjZnAvUGFnZXMvU3BlY2lhbEdyYW50cy5hc3B4P3V0bV9tZWRpdW09ZW1haWwmdXRtX3NvdXJjZT1nb3ZkZWxpdmVyeSIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyNDAxMDkuODgyMzgzMDEifQ.3MkclC5RIyfAp8aezP8byHhaZgTS3_eWPXFOChKSn2A/s/1308452828/br/234531603654-l> up to $20,000 per sponsor to startup or expand summer meal programs.

SFSP works to ensure children 18 and younger, who benefit from meal programs during the school year, continue to have that same access to nutritious meals when schools are closed, or students are unable to attend school in person.

“During the summer months, when school is not in session, many children lose consistent food access. Summer meal programs ensure that children continue to receive the nutrition they need to learn and grow,” ODE Summer Meals Outreach Coordinator Cathy Brock said. “Expanding access to the program is an important step to close the hunger gap in all areas of the state. ODE’s Child Nutrition Program is reaching out to ensure that children continue to receive meals throughout the summer.”

Schools, non-profit community organizations, local government agencies, camps and faith- based organizations that have the ability to manage a food service program may be SFSP sponsors<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm9yZWdvbi5nb3Yvb2RlL3N0dWRlbnRzLWFuZC1mYW1pbHkvY2hpbGRudXRyaXRpb24vc2ZzcC9QYWdlcy9CZWNvbWluZ2FTRlNQc3BvbnNvci5hc3B4P3V0bV9tZWRpdW09ZW1haWwmdXRtX3NvdXJjZT1nb3ZkZWxpdmVyeSIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyNDAxMDkuODgyMzgzMDEifQ.oETj2DbSK1OsOu4XfD5daUVl8lQX9JlfZqaiKGJEysY/s/1308452828/br/234531603654-l>. Organizations must enter into an agreement with ODE to operate the USDA Summer Food Service Program and are then reimbursed for serving healthy meals and snacks to children at approved sites.

Sites are places in the community where children receive meals in a safe and supervised environment. Sites may be located in a variety of settings, including schools, parks, community centers, health clinics, hospitals, libraries, migrant centers, apartment complexes and faith-based locations. Sponsors may be approved to operate and/or have oversight of multiple sites.
