Hi Carla,
We’ve just published a short piece reflecting on askON’s ten years of service. If you’re interested, you can read it here: http://open-shelf.ca/180701-ocula-10-years-of-askon/
The VR trend that has had the biggest impact for askON has been proactive chat by far. There’s also text, which we’ve added for visitors to ask quick library questions. I’m sure there are lots of other great tech trends (screen sharing software, knowledge bases, etc) but we aren’t currently using those in a big way. Also Uber reference, which someone spoke about at ALA (and one of our college libraries has been talking about for ages), though I don’t know how much of a trend this is yet!
I’m not sure this is relevant to you, but we’ve thought a lot about user trends and what that means for VR, because it helps our library partners to make the case locally for the service. One user trend that we have seen through our visitor survey is that an increasing number of visitors every year are report that they access the service simply because they prefer accessing online services, and not necessarily because other service points are busy or because they’re working remotely. This is just the space that college-aged students feel most at home, and so VR has become an expected service. I suspect this may be the same among other age groups, but don’t have that data! In Ontario a trend in higher ed in general is an increase in the number of international students as well as a greater awareness of accessibility issues, and VR has helped to meet the specific needs of these groups. We’ve heard from international students and students with disabilities that VR reduces communication and access barriers, making it easier and more comfortable for them to access reference services.

Subject: [collaborative-vr] Trends in VR
Hi All,
I'm giving a little spiel to our stakeholders (no big deal!) on Friday about AskMN. I'll be going over stats and our 10 yr anniversary. They would also like me to talk about trends in VR. For the life of me I'm finding this difficult. So I'm throwing this out to the collective wisdom for help!
Can you help with this? An idea or article to point to?
Best,
Carla
