During times of crisis, young children need strong emotional support from parents and educators to feel safe and secure. One of the most difficult topics to explain to a child is deportation, an issue that can cause deep fear, confusion, and anxiety, especially for children in immigrant families.

  *   How to use social stories as a tool to explain deportation in an age-appropriate way.
  *   Ways to provide honest yet comforting communication with children experiencing fear or uncertainty.

Parenting Healthy Preteens<https://php.kidsintransitiontoschool.org/> is designed to help parents support their children successfully bridge the period from childhood to adolescence. This program is based on the KITS and KEEP Programs at the Oregon Social Learning Center.

In Parenting Healthy Preteens, group facilitators will guide parents through ways to support their preteen's mental health, positive self-esteem, success at home and school, and ways to support themselves as parents!

Parents meet together online for 90-minutes, once a week for 8 weeks. Groups offered in English and Spanish.

WHEN: October 12th, 10am - 1pm
WHERE: Campbell Community Center and along the Ruth Bascom Bike Path!

Bikers will meet at the Campbell Community Center before being led out on a bike ride by SHIFT to the different project sites. Pick a project offered by one of the partners to work on or check out a couple. If you don't have wheels, Parks and Open Space will have a project site just a short walk from our starting location. Tools will be provided at each site and all ages are welcome!

ABOUT HOOTS<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1c6ppbYKNK1CI92BDS_Wppx_Xmo5knI6G/view>: The HOOTS program is a free, confidential, & voluntary service. We talk about mental health concerns, hard life events, & medical issues. We work in teams of 2: a crisis counselor & a medic (EMT or RN). HOOTS serves any teen who needs extra support. We currently serve teens 14+.

Started in 2016, HOOTS has served hundreds of local teens. We discuss anything that is relevant for our students and our staff are trained to provide support in anything ranging from family conflict to suicidality.

Our Mission is to support teens' mental and physical health by meeting them where they are at - in their schools. We are currently delivering our services in 13 area high schools: all Eugene 4J and Springfield high schools, Willamette and Oakridge high schools, Wellsprings Friends School, and Twin Rivers Charter School.

Send students to HOOTS if they struggle with anxiety, depression, self-harm, or suicidal ideation; they are experiencing big life changes or challenges such as housing or food insecurity; or they just need another safe person to talk to.

Students can refer themselves, or can be referred by friends, family, school staff, or other community partners.
