[Domestic Violence issues]

Hi, all:

After I sent out the email yesterday with the current 2012 DV fatality stats, I had a couple of requests for similar information regarding 2010-2011.

Please keep in mind that the DV deaths information is kept informally. I am sure that there are and have been deaths that I don't know about but are technically DV-related. As you review the information and think that I HAVE missed a case, please let me know. Some time ago, a group of us created and distributed a worksheet in order to more accurately keep track of all of the DV-related deaths in Oregon. I am attaching it to this email. If a DV-related death occurs in your county in the future, I would really appreciate if you, a member of your agency, or perhaps your local DV council could fill out the form and forward it to me.

So, as requested:

TOTAL DV-related deaths in 2010: 71
                **In a "typical" year, Intimate Partner Related deaths account for 25% of all violent deaths in Oregon. In 2010, IPV-related deaths accounted for 1/3 of all violent deaths in Oregon. Please note that the definition of "Intimate Partner Violence" is much narrower than the "Domestic Violence" definition most of us use in the criminal justice system. It is also much more limited than the definition of "Domestic Violence fatality" (included in the attached worksheet).

Multnomah: Boyfriend strangles/kills girlfriend (1) (Yes, this is a different case than the one above)
Multnomah: Husband shoots/kills wife, two of her friends and himself (4)

March:

Multnomah: BF's ex-GF's stabs/kills ex-BF's current GF (1)
Lane: Husband kills wife (drowning) (1)
Deschutes: Husband kills wife/son/himself (3)
Linn: Husband kills wife/himself (2)

April:

Jackson: Husband shoots/kills wife/himself (2)
Clackamas: Man shot/killed by another over relationship w/ same woman (1)

May:

Clackamas: Police shoot/kill man w/ knife after responding to DV call (1)
Tillamook: GF shoots/kills GF (1)

June:

Washington: Adult son kills mother (1)
Josephine: BF stabs/kills GF (1)
Washington: Police respond to domestic call, find victim bleeding from stab wounds, shoot/kill armed man. Both man and woman die. (2)
Multnomah: BF kills GF (1)

July:

Multnomah: BF beat to death GF (1)
Multnomah: Man killed another man over relationship w/ same woman (1)
Lane: Ex-BF strangles/kills ex-GF (1)
Washington: Husband shoots/kills wife/himself (2)
Clackamas: Wife shoots/kills husband (1)

August:

Deschutes: BF shoots/kills GF (1)
Multnomah: Son kills step-father in self-defense (step-father came to house w/gun looking for wife) (1)
Baker: Husband shoots/kills wife (1)
Polk: Adult son kills parents (2)
Washington: Husband shoots/kills wife/himself (2)
