The National Strangulation Training Institute, a Program of the Family Justice Center Alliance, Presents:

The Pandora Effect: Addressing Long-Term Health Consequences of Strangulation

Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 10:00am - 11:30am PST

(12:00-1:30pm CST/ 1:00-2:30pm EST)

Presented by:

Dr. Ellen Taliaferro, MD, FACEP

There is now mounting evidence in the medical literature that intimate partner violence, including strangulation, has long-term negative health consequences for survivors. This impact, what Dr. Ellen Taliaferro terms the Pandora Effect, lingers long after the bruises fade, the bones mend, and the abuse is over. Still, many victims, their friends and relatives, and those who serve them in the domestic violence advocacy, medical and law enforcement communities fail to understand how significantly this lingering footprint of violence is affecting their well-being and ability to carry on a normal life.

During this webinar, Dr. Taliaferro will discuss recent research and commonly diagnosed symptoms and health consequences of strangulation survivors, including behavioral changes and brain injuries. Attendees, including attorneys, will leave the webinar with the necessary understanding and knowledge to assist victims in their journey to long-term recovery.

This session is approved for 1 California Minimum Continuing Education (CEU) credit and 1 Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit. The National Strangulation Training Institute

The National Strangulation Training Institute (NSTI) was launched in October 2011 as a program of the National Family Justice Center Alliance. The NSTI was developed in response to the increasing demand for Intimate Partner Violence Strangulation Crimes training and technical assistance (consulting, planning and support services) from communities across the world. The NSTI serves as the comprehensive training and technical assistance provider for the United States Department of Justice for OVW grantees.

The NSTI provides training, technical assistance, web-based education programs, an online directory of national trainers and experts, and a clearinghouse of all research related to domestic violence and sexual assault strangulation crimes.

The goals of the National Strangulation Training Institute are to: Enhance the knowledge and understanding of professionals working with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault who are strangled; Improve policy and practice among the legal, medical, and advocacy communities; Maximize capacity and expertise; Increase offender accountability; and ultimately enhance victim safety.
