Good morning,
Please find attached a really well written article on DV and Firearms that appears in the most recent edition of Portland's newspaper, "Street Roots."
The article below discusses the most recent DV shooting at a San Bernardino elementary school where the perpetrator, who had a prior DV history, shot and killed his estranged wife, an 8-year old boy, and himself. The perpetrator also wounded a 9 year old boy who is expected to survive.
The article points out the proportional lack of attention paid to DV/IPV incidents:
"According to PolitiFact, there have been 71 deaths due to extremist attacks on U.S. soil<http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/oct/05/viral-image/fact-checking-comparison-gun-deaths-and-terrorism-/> from 2005 to 2015. Compare that to the drumbeat of women killed by their intimate partners, which number three daily<http://testkitchen.huffingtonpost.com/this-is-not-a-love-story/>. In California alone, there were 118 domestic violence-related homicides<https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/cjsc/publications/homicide/hm15/hm15.pdf> in 2015. On average, there are nearly 11 murder-suicides nationally each week. Most involve a man killing his wife or girlfriend using a gun. But they get little sustained media attention."
The article doesn't parse out how many of the perpetrators of the "extremist attacks" were previous DV perpetrators, but there is a good chance that many were.

SADLY, this morning police found the bodies of two young girls, 8 and 11, in an SUV in Gresham. Their mother called police early Wednesday morning after they and their father, who'd made threats against them, went missing. Police found the male subject and exchanged gun fire with him. The male subject died at the scene-it is unclear if he shot and killed himself or if police killed him. There is very little information other information at this time. These are the 17, 18, and 19th DV-related deaths in Oregon this year.
