Once again, on Sunday November 5th, the country watched with horror and shock as details of another mass shooting unfolded on the news. 26 people dead and another 20 injured in the town of Sutherland Springs, Texas.

It came as no surprise to advocates when we learned that the shooter had a history of domestic violence. We've heard this before. Too many times. And the data and evidence support what we know from survivors - that when victims and survivors of domestic violence speak about the dangers they face and the risk they believe a perpetrator of violence poses, we must listen to them. We must remember the critical lesson that believing and listening to the experiences of survivors can help us keep entire communities safe.

There is much that we can do with the information that we have about the connections between domestic violence, firearms, and homicide in order to increase safety in our homes and communities. Please use the information shared below to take part in whatever ways are meaningful and accessible to you.

1. Understand the connection between domestic violence and gun-related homicides

Analysis of mass shootings from 2009 to 2016 shows that in 54% of mass shootings, the shooters killed intimate partners or other family members. This and other data can be found on the Everytown for Gun Safety's Guns and Domestic Violence webpage<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001aPCEAZpTv5nqp8MibNYOfziR1x2nTVDmOk3WO1leEH1kOhbcHVV5_Mo4Zx20eXYn2bc9Pkhgy_VEelKSQXOV0bHZxY6izrBkr2QlVFWETOQgUFsZoLkTi1z8qYqh3CLL9EnoHV-wbtQn6j__y-bGTsDJIIMDwFS9bORqy3LiL6UK7wUinZZQv5Zm1CMvytVqHmNb2aPSOxeXYJR0dfTYXthzUotAabE8&c=eWv87cWT4dNC_6r93jq-4ZKYpvm7TouC3dYWbW2C0bWaimvSyW9NGQ==&ch=X_-Q3zdS0tzgCh9qSPjSBL-w0zEja5KRVCtrkiF-Y5adgQCicwyyYQ==>. The site provides an abundance of well researched fact sheets and educational resources to read and share.

2. Stay current on strategies for building a comprehensive plan to preventing domestic violence firearm homicide

The website promotes efforts of communities around the country to prevent domestic violence-related homicides through comprehensive implementation and enforcement of domestic violence-related firearm prohibitions at all levels of government. On October 19th, our community gathered for the 11th Annual Judge Stephen B. Herrell Awards & FVCC Celebration. We were proud to honor three award recipients this year: State Representative Tawna Sanchez, Kim Hirota, and Esperanza Valencia. Though these three outstanding individuals received awards this year, we certainly would like to extend our appreciation to everyone in the community invested in ending family violence. If you'd like to see a few photos from this year's event, please visit this album on Flickr<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001aPCEAZpTv5nqp8MibNYOfziR1x2nTVDmOk3WO1leEH1kOhbcHVV5_Mo4Zx20eXYnuYW0HdW2aj4JbFM-K2U1bAWxFO6KZyEBg-dBKm-iwvNbA9Pj93n_ri7U3SzcczJNem_3Zyv3pi9D9ADVOQN05vilzdd2KJ2U--m5ABqS1CCKPNhBW5DV37khDMpSpaagCf_MApNCXwqbmsOOvLS5gA==&c=eWv87cWT4dNC_6r93jq-4ZKYpvm7TouC3dYWbW2C0bWaimvSyW9NGQ==&ch=X_-Q3zdS0tzgCh9qSPjSBL-w0zEja5KRVCtrkiF-Y5adgQCicwyyYQ==>.
