2017 has been a tumultuous, difficult and inspiring year for those of us engaged both in the eradication of interpersonal violence and the struggle for immigrant rights. With survivors coming forward and galvanizing the culture through the #MeToo movement, attacks on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), travel bans on immigrant populations, as well as pro-immigrant activism within and outside of government systems, our work has never been more critical.
Proyecto UNICA is a dual domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and intervention program within El Programa Hispano Católico (EPHC), a culturally specific organization that has been serving Latinx communities since 1982. We recognize that Latinx survivors of sexual violence experience unique barriers to safety and healing due to racism and xenophobia. Abusers frequently exploit vulnerabilities such as lack of documentation, language barriers, and racist stereotypes to maintain power and control over Latinx survivors. When survivors do seek resources they often find that systems are not tailored to their cultural experiences or to addressing barriers such as limited access to federal resources. In worst case scenarios, survivors are denied help by outright discrimination.
We believe that connection to culture is essential to trauma recovery, and provide bilingual and culturally responsive services every day. In a recent focus group, one participant shared with us:
"I was always an independent person. In leaving that situation, I lost everything. I lost my self-confidence... If it weren't for you all, I don't know what I would have done with what was remaining of my life. I feel as if I've reclaimed myself... the independent woman that I always was."
Another stated:
"'How did you get out of that situation?' my friends asked me, 'with papers, a new house and your children and everything?' I told them, 'Go to EPHC! Of course.'"
We offer holistic support to reduce barriers and empower survivors through our 24/7 crisis line, case management and support groups. In 2017 we worked harder than ever to fight for our community. This included dedicating funds to helping clients with immigration issues, increasing sexual violence prevention services with Latinx youth, providing holiday gift support for families, and free therapy for uninsured survivors. In the last few years, our sexual assault services team has grown from 1 person to 5 advocates and a therapist, allowing us to empower survivors more than ever before. We look forward to continuing this rewarding service to our beautiful community in 2018.

In recognition of this, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence conducted a 2017 survey of over 1,100 domestic and sexual violence advocates, legal services/legal aid providers, social services program staff, and housing/homelessness and anti-poverty advocates.
