New Asthma Quick-Look

Although pediatric deaths to asthma are rare, they are highly preventable. Fatality review teams plan an essential role in understanding the circumstances surrounding asthma deaths. The National Center analyzed 744 deaths in the National Fatality Review-Case Reporting System of children aged 0-17 and died due to asthma to create this Asthma Quick-Look. Key findings include:

  *   42 percent of deaths occurred between 9 pm-5 am, with the peak time of the incident being 11 pm.
  *   91 percent of children who died due to asthma were receiving health care for asthma before their death.
  *   29 percent of children/families were not able to follow prescribed health care plans for asthma.
  *   Research is needed to understand better why the proportion of non-Hispanic Black children who die of asthma is higher than other race groups.
