Happy Halloween!
I don't know if many of you have tried the "Add Basemap" maps from ESRI in ArcMap version 10. They are very nice basemaps ready to go. In particular, check out "Streets" and zoom to an area you are familiar with to about 1:7000. You should see a really nice base street map with a faint outline of taxlots. Don't have a favorite area? Pick somewhere around Stayton - you'll see the map has the updates for the new overpass that was recently finished. (Unfamiliar? Hit the little arrow right of the "Plus" button; Select "Add Basemap..."; Select "Streets" You must have version 10.)
I see great potential with this base map in making web applications so much simplier to make and easy to maintain.
However, if I were to use this map service for my web application (not using ArcMap), I would not be able to zoom in quite as close and I would not be able to see the taxlot outline. It is my understanding we would need to pay for this level of zoom. The "free" level of zoom is just about one or two scales too small (too general).
I am hoping that GPL could possibly negotiate in the ELA that the State of Oregon could have access to these map services at these more zoomed-in scales for web mapping development. Could GPL add this to the list?
Thank you for your considerations.
Dorothy
