Diana,
We are using EPSG 3857 when we want our maps to work with the tiling scheme for Google, Bing, or Esri's free arcgis online resources, such as http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/World_Imagery/MapServer
http://spatialreference.org/ref/sr-org/epsg3857-wgs84-web-mercator-auxiliary-sphere/
Hopefully Esri will fix their measuring tool.

Subject: [gpl_list] Projections for AGOL
Hi All,
I am wondering when you publish a feature service to AGOL or a service to ArcServer to be used on AGOL what projection to you use?
I was told by Eric E. to always use WGS_1984_Web_Mercator_Auxiliary_Sphere, for various reasons.
Well we had discovered an issue with this projection in using the measure tool in AGOL viewer. Call Esri, the Tech told me I need to us WGS_1984 geographic projection and not a project coordinate system projection, such as WGS_1984_Web_Mercator_Auxiliary_Sphere. The fun (ha ha thing) is that the WGS_1984_Web_Mercator_Auxiliary_Sphere, was not giving us measuring problems a month ago.
Therefore my question.
Thanks,
Diana
