Webinar Speakers:
Larry Cohen, M.S.W., Founder and Executive Director, The Prevention Institute
Mr. Cohen has been an advocate for public health and prevention since 1972. An important focus of his work has been to develop local policies that support health and wellness and spur legislation at local, state, and federal levels. As the founding director of the Contra Costa County Prevention Program, he formed the first coalition in the nation to change tobacco policy by bringing together key stakeholders to initiate the nation's first multi-city smoking ban. This coalition served as a catalyst for other statewide and national efforts including smoking bans on airplanes and restrictions in public places, restaurants, and workplaces. Mr. Cohen also established the Food and Nutrition Policy Consortium that focuses on food labeling laws and healthier food options. His Prevention Institute has developed and created tools and frameworks to assist communities in developing effective public health prevention strategies. Mr. Cohen is a faculty member of CDC's Action Communities For Health, Innovation, and Environmental Change (ACHIEVE) and Strategic Alliance For Health (SAH), Healthy Community training initiatives.
Mark Fenton, M.S.
Mr. Fenton is a national authority and recognized expert on walking. He has been an Olympic competitor in race walking, editor-at-large of WALKING Magazine, and host of the PBS series America's Walking. Mr. Fenton is a recognized authority on public health issues and advocates for the need for community, environmental, and public-policy initiatives to encourage more physical activity; such as, walking and bicycling and the local community level. As a member of the executive committee of the Partnership for a Walkable America, Mr. Fenton has addressed a wide range of national audiences from transportation and urban planning groups to public health professionals.
