Human Trafficking: The Scope of the Issue
This presentation covers the definition of human trafficking; major forms of trafficking (e.g., forced labor, exploitation of children, domestic servitude, and others), tips for identifying trafficking victims/survivors, and resources available to domestic and foreign survivors. Participants will learn the factors that fuel human trafficking; characteristics and special needs of survivors (all ages and both sexes), their experiences; how traffickers operate; effectiveness of governmental anti-trafficking policies, and research gaps.
Presentation goals:
Gain a basic understanding of labor and sex trafficking as defined by federal law. Learn the 4 P's of human trafficking: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution and Partnering. Learn tips for identifying trafficking victims/survivors. Learn the protocol for what to do if you suspect trafficking. Identify what resources are available for identified victims.
BIO's:
KEITH BICKFORD
Keith Bickford has been a Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff for 16 years. He is also a Deputized Special US Marshall. He currently serves as the Director of the Oregon Human Trafficking Task Force which is charged with investigating and prosecuting cases of human trafficking throughout the State of Oregon. Deputy Bickford's current duties include: Coordinating all efforts to provide services to and investigate trafficking in Oregon; Opening new human trafficking cases; Monitoring human trafficking reports; Searching for new human trafficking victims; Victims assistance; Training law enforcement; Public Education; Coordinating faith based communities; Providing input into legislation; Certifying T and U Visa application; Directing Oregonians Against Trafficking Humans Public Awareness Campaign; Coordinating local, state and federal law enforcement agencies; Collecting national human trafficking statistics; and Providing education in public and private schools.
CAROL FENTON
Carol Fenton currently serves as a chairperson, social media strategist and volunteer for Oregonians Against Trafficking Humans (OATH), the education outreach, training, and public awareness branch of the Oregon Human Trafficking Task Force. Ms. Fenton trains schools, businesses, faith-based organizations and individuals on the issue of human trafficking, comprehensive efforts to end it, and ways to get involved. Ms. Fenton actively serves as a volunteer member of the Sex Worker Outreach Committee (SWOC), and Portland Area Global Aids Coalition (PAGAC).
