*Hello Health Education and Promotion Section friends and members!* Happy
summer! (It's finally arrived, right?) We thought it'd be a nice idea to
formally introduce the section leadership and make a couple quick updates
and appeals.
- We are working hard on planning this next year's section activities,
which we are excited to share with you at our upcoming Summer Meet & Greet.
(Invitations will soon be sent out so keep your eyes peeled!)
- MEMBERS, PLEASE SEND US A BRIEF BIO to include in our roster. It's
easy! Just include your current position and/or your
educational/professional background, your interests, and something fun
about yourself!
- NON-MEMBERS, please consider joining our section. Benefits of
membership can be found at
http://www.oregonpublichealth.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57
*And introducing the HPE Section Leadership:*
*Your Section Chair is Alissa Leavitt, MPH, CHES*. Alissa is a faculty
member in Health at Portland Community College (PCC). Her responsibilities
include Health Professions program planning at the Rock Creek campus.
Alissa is a graduate of Portland State University (PSU) with both a Master
of Public Health in Health Policy and Management and a Bachelor of Science
in Community Health Education. She is also a Certified Health Education
Specialist.
Previously, Alissa was a Health Educator and Grant Coordinator with the
State Oral Health Program where she assessed, planned, and implemented oral
health messaging and best practices. This included development and
coordination of Oregon’s “First Tooth” program. She has also worked as a
Partnership Program Coordinator for the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer
Information Service (CIS). There she worked with organizations that reach
medically underserved populations to help plan, implement, and evaluate
effective and sustainable cancer control strategies. She has worked as an
adjunct professor in the School of Community Health at PSU and as an online
professor for Highland Community College. Before joining the CIS, Alissa
was an Outreach, Education and Evaluation Coordinator for the Child and
Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative in the Department of Pediatrics at
Oregon Health & Science University. When she’s not working, Alissa enjoys
riding her bike around Portland with her husband and son and trying out new
restaurants and food carts.
*Your new Section Board Representative and Co-Chair is Amanda Lawrence,
MPH.* Amanda is the Health Promotion Coordinator at The Wallace Medical
Concern where she is implementing a three year Health Literacy project,
including interventions addressing diabetes prevention and management,
senior health, child health, food security, and asthma management.
Originally a mid-western gal she earned her B.A. from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison and spent the next couple years in Chicago working on
international humanitarian grant programs before making the great trek out
west. Since moving to Portland in 2006, she has graduated from the OMPH
program and has worked with The Josiah Hill III Clinic, Portland State
University's Institute on Aging, Upstream Public Health, Oregon
Environmental Council, and Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. She spent Fall
2011/Spring 2012 in Chile, volunteering for a women's health education
organization. Amanda is also a graduate of the School of Natural Cookery in
Boulder, CO and loves whole foods natural goodness and sharing cooking tips
and recipes. She is always seeking out opportunities to speak Spanish, has
a love/hate relationship with hot power yoga, and is trying to ride her
bike more often.
*Your Section Secretary is Kim Krull*. Kim has just completed here BS in
Community Health: Health Studies with honors from Portland State
University. In addition to her work with the Health Education and Promotion
section, she is completing her internship with the program manager of OPHA
over summer 2012 and will be assisting with the administrative duties
leading into OPHA’s annual conference in October.
Kim recently finished internship within the Child & Adolescent Health
Measurement (CAHMI) Initiative at OHSU as well. Although Kim’s knowledge
and experience are still developing, her areas of interest include maternal
& child health, community development, mind-body wellness care, nutrition
and access to quality food. Kim is extremely motivated in ensuring that
public health educators become an important part of Oregon’s current health
reform in order to help address health disparities through the management
and utilization of community resources. In her free time, Kim enjoys
hiking and gardening, and strives to live a productive and healthy life the
best she can!
As always, we'd love to hear your input. We are here to create networking,
professional development, and advocacy engagement opportunities FOR YOU so
we can build a stronger health promotion and health education workforce in
Oregon! Thank you for your continued support!
Regards,
Amanda, Alissa, and Kim
