> Get Ready for National Health Education Week 2012!
>
> As we launch a new school year, there has never been a greater need to improve the health of our nation's young people than now. In the United States, the leading causes of adolescent death and disability are related to preventable health risk behaviors, including unhealthy dietary behaviors, sedentary lifestyles, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, unsafe sex, injury and violence.
>
> National Health Education Week (NHEW) 2012, October 15-19, aims to improve the health and future of America's youth through this year's theme, "Adolescent Health: Planting Seeds for a Healthier Generation."
>
> As part of NHEW 2012, the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) offers a planning guide and toolkit for health education specialists and other professionals who work with youth in schools, community organizations, youth groups and other environments to raise awareness of adolescent health issues and empower young people to make informed health decisions. The NHEW planning guide and toolkit is loaded with resources, fact sheets, sample release, sample proclamation and suggested activities for use with teens, parents, teachers, schools and others who interact with youth. It also explains the valuable role of health education specialists in working with schools, communities, parent groups, and other groups to promote adolescent health.
>
> Each day of NHEW is themed around an adolescent health topic:
> Monday, Oct. 15: Nutrition and Physical Activity: Action for healthy adolescents
> Tuesday, Oct. 16: Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use: Integrating evidence-based strategies for prevention
> Wednesday, Oct. 17: Sexual Health: Making the case for comprehensive sex education
> Thursday, Oct. 18: Emerging Trends in Adolescent Injury and Violence
> Friday, Oct. 19: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, Youth: Embracing diversity and promoting inclusion
> Complimentary NHEW materials are available at www.sophe.org/NHEW.cfm. Health education specialists, organizations and communities are encouraged to make additional copies and distribute them as needed. Follow SOPHE on Twitter and Facebook and use #NHEW to spread awareness and to keep up-to-date with SOPHE and NHEW-related news.
