Spring has officially sprung, which means, in addition to intermittent showers of rain and hail, the flowers are in riotous bloom, and the sun is making its appearance more regularly these days. Hurray!

International No Diet Day (INDD) is Monday, May 6th. INDD is a day to celebrate the beauty and diversity of ALL our natural sizes and shapes. It is a day to affirm every body's right to self esteem, respect, and emotional and physical well-being. We encourage you to declare this day as a personal moratoriaum on diet/weight obsession. Learn the facts about weight loss, dieting, health and body size. Recognize how dieting perpetuates violence against women. Honor the victims of eating disorders and weight loss surgeries. Do something to help end weight discrimination, sizism and fat phobia. Share our video (see below) with family, friends and coworkers.

And in the spirit of spring, we at Be Nourished would like to share with you our own verdant offering: our very first video, created in collaboration with Tom Frisch of Tom11Films<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001rf0hdpC8mpL8JxbvValM56DSIXhjOzhEw1CfhiuMn6AhnqSCUPxjNMi2ixrlsvmgi4BB3gTkPVfn4qxm-a3WWIZux6HJixtnrTk71dvSeHU=>. We are very pleased with the result!

Body-Positive Medicine
by Dr. Deanna McCrary, ND

Isn't all medicine body positive? Sadly, not always. The medical community often over-emphasizes lower body weight as a goal to reach and maintain in order to "achieve" health. The idea that a person can achieve metabolic health while being at a weight outside of the accepted norms is often viewed as suspect at best and medical heresy at worst. But is there a way to achieve overall health without focusing on body weight?

Fortunately, the old views are starting to change--slowly. More and more research is showing that traditional dieting does not work in the long-term and often leads directly to even more weight gain. Also, patients are more likely to engage in physical activity if it is something that they already do that feels fun and pleasurable, and can be part of their daily life. Further, recent studies have shown that excess body weight may actually have a protective health effect and prolong life rather than shorten it. "In study after study, overweight and moderately obese patients with certain chronic diseases often live longer and fare better than normal-weight patients with the same ailments. The accumulation of evidence is inspiring some experts to re-examine long-held assumptions about the association between body fat and disease," states Harriet Brown in a September 17, 2012 New York Times article titled "In 'Obesity Paradox,' Thinner May Mean Sicker."

What Does "Body-Positive" mean?

To define the phrase "body positive" I will paraphrase the principles of Health at Every Size(r) (HAES) as coined by the Association for Size Diversity and Health<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001rf0hdpC8mpK8TtdwzaEQwOIQ4IA5FSRO7gd6IubKll7ivSCmAjLxKk8Qv-OREp9JpIdkKPXBlMNnxIFtCyFIK-BA2nhUIyuv8mLTAjxCp_3CfNlEfUXMkCvMQ2UcqIlJ>. HAES is a health-care movement that is synonymous with body positivity. To be body-positive one accepts and respects that there is natural diversity in body size and shape. Recognizing that health and well-being are multi-dimensional and include physical, social, spiritual, occupational, emotional, and intellectual aspects, a body positive person promotes all aspects of health and well-being for people of all sizes. A body-positive person eats in a manner which balances individual nutritional needs with hunger, satiety, appetite, and pleasure. They engage in individually appropriate, enjoyable, life-enhancing physical activity, rather than exercise focused on a goal of weight loss.

To be body-positive does not mean that one has reached some blissful state of 100% body-acceptance or intuitive-eating nirvana without a shred of judgment toward oneself or others. It means we are on the road, reading about it, talking with others, putting some of these ideas into practice, and increasing our awareness.

What traits do health care providers who embrace these tenets have in common? Here are a few:

  *   Patients are treated equally

  * There are no weight-loss lectures

  * Patients are not weighed at each visit (generally)
  * BMI is not used to assess health
  * Offices accommodate and welcome all size
  * These providers have examined their own prejudices

A Poem: What My Body Has Taught Me
By Margarita Tartakovsky, MS

My body has taught me
what feels good and what doesn't.
When I need kindness
and when I need rest.
She's taught me to slow down,
and to use all my senses to wander this world.
She's taught me about patience,
even though I'm used to running her to the ground
or condemning her for supposed flaws.
She's taught me forgiveness.
She's taught me that I am resilient,
even though I often forget that I am.
My body has taught me the beauty of laughter,
a piece of music,
a balmy wind against my face
and the soothing warmth of green tea with honey.
She's let me release pentup powerful emotions,
pen stories and create art that I am proud of.
She's taught me how to listen
and care for my needs,
especially when sickness strikes like it has this week.
She's taught me that I am a warrior,
and that it's OK on the days I am not.
My body has taught me to express love
and to experience it.
She's taught me that pain is fleeting,
and to try again.
She's taught me that I am a legacy,
centuries of memories and heritage running through my veins.
While I'll keep forgetting and re-learning these lessons,
I am oh-so grateful for this body of mine
for carrying me
when all I wanted was to be anywhere else
but in my own skin
when I yearned to abandon and escape my body
and did on many days.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
