Colleagues,

Perhaps you recall the announcement on the recent Technical Assistance calls that updated county-level chronic disease and risk factor data are now available? While I prefer to distribute these via a link to our website, technical difficulties have prevented that. Instead the updated tables are attached.

These will be revised slightly to reflect the alignment of Wasco, Sherman and Gilliam into the North Central Health District in the near future, but otherwise please consider these data final. I'd also like to take a moment to review why we include age-adjusted and unadjusted numbers in these tables, and when to use one versus the other.

Age-adjusting is a mathematical technique that allows us to compare one or more places (or one place, over a number of years) when the underlying age distributions are different. So use the age-adjusted number when you're comparing your county with another county and with Oregon.

Use unadjusted numbers to measure the actual burden of a condition in your county. For instance, if a grant application asked for the number of adults in your county with diabetes, you would multiply the unadjusted diabetes prevalence by the number of adults in your county.

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions about this or other data topics. I welcome your input. Thanks, Stacey
