Hello,

I participated on a North American Quitline Consortium webinar yesterday related to e-cigarettes and their cessation implications. Below is a summary of some key points I learned as well as an overview of how the Oregon Tobacco Quit Line is handling the issue with participants.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional information.

Information from NAQC E-Cigarette Webinar

There is not any conclusive research about whether or not e-cigarettes help people quit tobacco.

Top reasons people say they are using e-cigarettes

* Adults: to use them while on tobacco-free campuses

* Youth: to conceal them during school

Recent study on e-cigarette use by Quit Line participants (by Alere Wellbeing Inc.):

* 31% of people in the study used e-cigarettes

* Top reason for using e-cigarettes: to quit tobacco

* There was a higher tobacco quit rate in those who never used e-cigs (31%) compared to those who used them (17%)

* Click here<http://ntr.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2013/05/07/ntr.ntt061.abstract.html?papetoc> to read the study

Oregon Tobacco Quit Line and E-Cigarettes

* E-cigarette users are encouraged to contact the Quit Line to get help with quitting e-cigs and tobacco.

* Quit Coaches follow a protocol on how to work with e-cigarette users. They do not recommend e-cigarettes as cessation aides or as a safe alternative to traditional tobacco products.

* Participants can use e-cigarettes in the program and still be "quit": if participants indicate they have not used tobacco but are using e-cigarettes, they are counted as quit in their 30-day respondent quit rates. This evaluation method may change in the future.

* There is a new monthly report available documenting e-cigarette usage by Oregon Quit Line participants.
