Good morning!

We are pleased to announce news shared with Tribal Health Administrators and other tribal partners at the SB 770 Health Cluster meeting this week regarding 2013-2014 Tribal Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (TPEP) grant application reviews. The following nationally-esteemed tribal tobacco control professionals will be reviewing 2013/2014 Oregon Tribal TPEP applications:

1. Nicole (Coco) Tovez, Community Development Senior Manager, ClearWay Minnesota has over fifteen years of tobacco programming, policy advocacy and community health promotion experience. She has a personal and professional commitment to promoting optimal well-being and to combat negative health affects in Indigenous communities. She is dedicated to revitalization and incorporation of the traditional ways that sustain indigenous communities and improve community health through the preventative measures.

2. Lori New Breast, Consultant, Mahnokini & Associates, is a member of the Amskapipikuni (Blackfeet) Nation and lives on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. Lori serves as a national and international consultant to promote self-determined optimum cultural health for indigenous communities. She has over 21 years of experience providing culturally based services to American Indian, Alaskan Native, First Nations, and other indigenous communities in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Poland. Lori’s work is dedicated to the principles of self-determination and cultural expression in the development of viable practices to support the well-being of indigenous peoples.

3. Verné Faye Boerner, Independent Consultant, is Iñupiaq Eskimo and an enrolled tribal member in the Native Village of Kiana, Alaska. Verné served as the Administrative Officer at Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board 2000 to 2008. Her passion is addressing health disparities in indigenous and minority populations through health research, policy development, education and outreach. She is a firm believer in community-based approaches to best tap the existing strengths and resources these resilient populations already possess to garner additional resources and greater understanding of the overall health needs and priorities of the people. Verné works from the understanding that culturally intelligent approaches are needed to build, and build upon, evidence-based approaches.

Reviewers will provide feedback on the tribal TPEP program plan and make recommendations to ensure that the scope and breadth of the proposed work accomplishes the intended reach and policy objectives.

We are grateful for the participation of these reviewers and expect that their contributions will benefit Tribal TPEP applicants in finalizing meaningful and achievable objectives, milestones, collaborations, strategies, and activities in their proposed plans.

Feedback from external reviewers as well as from HPCDP staff reviewers will be communicated to you in a memo from your liaison.

Please note the following important dates and deadlines:
Ø TPEP applications are due by 4pm on Monday, March 4.
Ø Following the review period, liaisons will send feedback to tribal TPEP coordinators at the end of March.
Ø Edits and negotiations will take place through June 28.

High regards for the good work you do,

Terresa White, Program Analyst, Heart Disease and Stroke Program
