We want to share this information from the Office on Smoking or Health.
* We Card Awareness Month. The tobacco industry and its allies are enlisting elected officials and local businesses to endorse and promote their We Card program. Please alert Lorna Schmidt at Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) if you are aware of efforts to promote We Card in your community or state, LSchmidt at TobaccoFreeKids.org<mailto:LSchmidt at TobaccoFreeKids.org>
* For more information about the effect of the We Card program on sales to minors and youth smoking rates, see: The 'We Card' program: tobacco industry 'youth smoking prevention' as industry self-preservation<http://europepmc.org/articles/PMC2882417>. AJPH (2010)
"...the We Card program was undertaken for 2 primary purposes: to improve the tobacco industry's image and to reduce regulation and the enforcement of existing laws. Policy-makers should be cautious about accepting industry self-regulation at face value, both because it redounds to the industry's benefit and because it is ineffective." (Quote from the article above.)
