Save the Date(s)! Rx for Better Health: Walking, Biking, Moving

Please join one of several presentations and exchanges planned with James F. Sallis, Ph.D., Director of Active Living Research, which started as a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is now administered through the University of California-San Diego, where Dr. Sallis is a Distinguished Professor of Family & Preventive Medicine. Other health, transportation, and land use planning professionals will participate in professional events, along with public events in each of the four regions. Jim’s tour includes the following cities:

  * Tuesday, October 7: Portland and Beaverton
  *   Wednesday, October 8: Salem
  *   Thursday, October 9: Eugene
  *   Friday, October 10: Bend
Topics for discussion:

  * What does the latest research say about childhood health and active communities?
  * How can community design, land use, and transportation policies enable people to be more physically active – and, in turn, be healthier throughout their lives?
  * What can health, transportation, and land use professionals do to enable physical activity in the built environment and to make the transportation system more “physical activity-friendly?”
Two different types of activities are planned in each location: a technical meeting for professional planners, engineers, and public health and health care professionals during the day and another meeting for the public at night. For more information about the events, including locations, times, and registration, go to www.oregonapa.org<http://www.oregonapa.org>.

This speaker series is part of the 2014 Healthy Communities Speaker Series co-sponsored by the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association, the Oregon Transportation and Growth Management Program, the Oregon Health Authority’s Public Health Division, 1000 Friends of Oregon, as well as many other local organizations and businesses. Special thanks to Oregon Public Health Institute, City of Eugene, and Building a Better Bend.

Also, please stay tuned for more follow-up workshops on this topic in 2015 from the Oregon Transportation and Growth Management Program, in partnership with the Oregon Public Health Division.
