Dear partners -
I hope you have been following the recent release by the U.S. Surgeon General of Step It Up!, the Call to Action on Walking & Walkable Communities<http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/calls/walking-and-walkable-communities/index.html>. This Call to Action is involving many sectors, from health systems to transportation, and mayors to major employers. This is a major effort to increase physical activity, reduce the burden of chronic disease, and save health care costs.
If you missed the webcast of the Call to Action, you can check it out here<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k-j4XtsNqQ>. Also see the great resources<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?KaiserPermanente/66a4c38568/84a1ae520d/350fa51afd> put together by the Office of the Surgeon General. There is a one-page infographic<http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/calls/walking-and-walkable-communities/sector-infographic.html> that captures all of this very succinctly too. If you tweet, check out #StepItUp.
I have three additional pieces of information to share with you today:
1. Talking Points
OHA-PHD has developed talking points that may be helpful as you in your work. Whether you are referencing the Call to Action directly, or simply promoting active transportation, Safe Routes to Schools, or other efforts to get more Oregonians moving, please feel free to use the attached points.
2. Mini-grants
America Walks and the Every Body Walk! Collaborative announced a new micro grant program<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0014KyG05CuoHDCIJ2NLjdlSxXcQsD7hl6ZEGwEzMOVCEqp84giSpukRVHBHfz15wkkLqJi-D7A5scmLAgZKpKjrefeTfSfFaZs2on2H2HExvW-N_psuCHFgDJFl5lA3gk1tVTabDWDXlIDm083BimmmkKFvtBy_bWzAgvnFdy8jVSMLM34Q1oA8Qv1DOQ7E0AiqvqmWaNis-vBvsX9hk3bV2n586uwxJZw1TO-t4gJoh7gBMpCsAR2pSMchotAawhi&c=aE9vUciLZ0GfKy-Na7RZ7ohzKF0HJojw0V5tbXFT79n8cVfEZ5LWfg==&ch=NS8vWIvSep2HAXFjDJ4Zpk4ihgcdfMJUIJeedUkFNQgvGFdVEHJM7Q==> designed to assist local walking advocates build on the momentum of the newly released Call to Action. The program will fund 10-15 community groups for activities designed to increase local walking programming and stimulate community demand for infrastructure improvements that provide accessible, safe walkable places for the entire community. Applications are due by October 15.
3. Webinar on national and regional efforts to use the Call to Action
Join America Walks and the Every Body Walk! Collaborative for this free webinar, the first part in an exciting new initiative to bring together local advocates and federal agencies to grow the work being done to make America a great place to walk. Presenters will share more about how health (HHS), transportation (DOT), and environment (EPA) are coming together to support the Call to Action. There will be ideas and contacts for connecting with local and regional offices with resources for walking projects.
When: October 15 12pm - 1pm Pacific. Register here<https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/7955376014742529025>.
