Hello Healthy Community Partners,
I am passing along four school wellness opportunities that help connect public health efforts with education. These opportunities provide a good chance to learn more about the work your local education partners are doing around student and staff wellness, and how public health can further their efforts.

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
The Oregon Department of Education is conducting a second round of community forums across the state to gather input on Oregon's Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) state plan that will be submitted this spring. ESSA is the name given to the 2015 renewal of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This Act is the main federal law that controls how the U.S. Department of Education (ED) disperses the federal education funding that states receive. The last time ESEA was renewed, in 2001, it was known as No Child Left Behind. ESSA acknowledges the need for schools to educate the whole child and ensure equitable access to quality education and the conditions that support student learning and staff engagement. Development of the state ESSA plan provides an important opportunity to integrate health and wellness indicators into education planning and practice. The attached document provides more information about currently scheduled locations between now and the end of January. More information about how State ESSA Plans can support health and wellness can be found here<https://healthyschoolscampaign.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/State-ESSA-Framework.pdf> .
