Since the blog for Healthy Communities was just updated yesterday, I am sending along this announcement on two rapidly approaching webinars. These webinars feature some of the leading experts on physical activity research and policy.
Effective Walking and Walkability Interventions - Webinar 1: Wednesday, August 3rd, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm PDT
Register for the webinar<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001merwHLVz22tlcp7Wqg8DoFnHhbwMMrdedbQe3-HpHMTUUmNu3F0LpcQUfX6xa_wBbSF16fn2jLd-4TVyoxlTIkCV4hizy88whr77Y5C4uzLPXqfAuFdpI6j8T5dTPbsftRDnLCt5OSpeUGm1Y2GRxnA4JPWhNfQMZQ30GK5TAgZq54cyemGaWNi8XemGWV1V54yZyZRR8Ixm3HKltUPsQo-B51isam3R1Bgzxog3a2rHtCvxroAE6q6jrWeRhKUO&c=NzB7fh3pWG-sD6HBScHLu5M1b1T6kpRBRZP8r_OHZpoN1LscR18gzQ==&ch=4_4-p9-mBb6KVwKxx1MEfZ9eBrvXnj4ygelia13bL2A2-L1fKSesaA==>.
There are a growing number of evidence-based strategies to improve walking and walkability, but few of them have achieved wide use. Thus, there is a need to work toward improved dissemination and implementation for the most promising interventions. Leading researchers will provide an overview of the state of the science on effective walking and walkability interventions, specifically as it relates to D&I research. Important target populations, including racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups at highest risk for inactivity, will be discussed. Speakers will highlight interventions that have an evidence-base but have not been widely disseminated or implemented.
Increasing Walking at the Community Level: What Works? Gregory W. Heath, DHSc, MPH, Guerry Professor, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
This presentation will provide a brief background about the importance of physical activity and how the mode of walking can effectively meet the Guidelines for Physical Activity for Americans by adhering to implementation principles outlined in the National Plan for Physical Activity, the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities, 'Step it Up', and the Guide to Community Preventive Services. Examples of evidence-based approaches to promoting walking will be discussed along with the importance of community organization, partnering, adaptation, and community tailoring of walking interventions.
Walkability Interventions Chanam Lee, PhD, Professor, Texas A&M University
This presentation starts with a brief overview of the literature on the definitions and benefits of walkability or walkable communities. It then focuses on promising walkability interventions, and ends with discussions on challenges in and strategies for implementation.
Disparities in Access to Walkable Communities and Physical Activity Opportunities NiCole Keith, PhD, Professor, Indiana University, Indianapolis
This presentation will identify populations that have low or no access to safe walking opportunities and provide evidence regarding why. Examples of both sociocultural and environmental barriers to walking will be provided. Lastly, frameworks and strategies that can improve walking access will be presented.
Moderator: Kate Kraft, PhD, Executive Director, America Walks
Research Translation: Lessons from Dissemination and Implementation Research for Interventions Promoting Walking and Walkability - Webinar 2: Thursday, August 18th, 10:00 - 11:00 am PDT
Register for the webinar<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001merwHLVz22tlcp7Wqg8DoFnHhbwMMrdedbQe3-HpHMTUUmNu3F0LpcQUfX6xa_wBgL4cE9bgRdnmRi1FMsFQid4zy141A9NDn4EOfWbhypaNAw2-MqY0hi--AD7WwxyMW-66eTVdRs2xvzHAWgsRpN1DaO4czLS8AYU9rqsQbivnroxqJH0Y_Uepfi-EJNCljdooVRyZ2AhzDYFcOB_6Azw827UQVaOgmyEao169ZIW8IjFywPE7xModWLVKX6Ho_VYlkxtV1G4BpSfh3jGa-hNclyA_cqeDX_-Rgvfa8bDR7DYyKG461n_M_ekWYBDeMlEZQaLXdKzXPoFOSLvNUW3qz80_oWTIvGRPh8QyS14=&c=NzB7fh3pWG-sD6HBScHLu5M1b1T6kpRBRZP8r_OHZpoN1LscR18gzQ==&ch=4_4-p9-mBb6KVwKxx1MEfZ9eBrvXnj4ygelia13bL2A2-L1fKSesaA==>.
The objective of this webinar will be to discuss how complex research results can be translated to inform practice and policy. The presenters will describe appropriate study designs and methods for Dissemination and Implementation research. These principles will be illustrated with examples.
Public Health and Policy Dissemination Research - Ross C. Brownson, PhD, Bernard Becker Professor, Director, Prevention Research Center, Washington University in St. Louis
This presentation will explore the field of dissemination and implementation science by providing: an overview of key concepts, critical issues for developing research proposals, useful tools and frameworks, and funding opportunities.
Translating What We Have Learned into Practice & Policy Jacqueline Kerr, PhD, MSc, University of California, San Diego
This presentation will describe a walking and walkability program for older adults delivered in two distinct settings and highlight how the program has developed to include more systematic leader training and sustainability planning. Dr. Kerr will share assessment methods and discuss how the data are being used in practice improvements and to raise awareness in the age-friendly policy arena.
Moderator: James F. Sallis, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health; Chief, Division of Behavioral Medicine, University of California, San Diego; Director, Active Living Research
Can't make a webinar that you want to see?
