Good morning, TPEP Grantees. Happy June!
This is the first monthly update on the statewide tobacco and alcohol retail assessment.
The tobacco and alcohol retail assessment aims to gather statewide point-of-sale data at tobacco and alcohol retailers. The widespread availability of tobacco and alcohol products and the visibility of tobacco, alcohol and sugary drink marketing at point-of-sale remain a significant public health concern, particularly in low socio-economic communities or neighborhoods with higher density of communities of color.
HPCDP staff will be sending out updates monthly now that the assessments are in full swing. We'll include how things are going, observations from the field, and resources for work in the retail environment. Let us know if there's other information you'd like to see shared!
The assessments are moving quickly, and there was a lot of great effort last month statewide.
Statewide progress: Here's a snapshot of how the audits are progressing.
* Number of total assessments completed: Over 600 assessments are complete, in just the first six weeks.
* Number of grantees that have finished their data collection: 6 counties and one tribe - congratulations to Yamhill, Columbia, Benton, Wheeler, Polk, and Union Counties, and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde for finishing their assessments this month.
Story of the month: We received this story from Clackamas County, which illustrates collaboration across TPEP and ADPEP to complete the retail assessments. It also has some examples of industry marketing to youth. We edited a bit for length - look for more details in RSN calls or reach out to Tiffany Hicks (thicks at co.clackamas.or.us<mailto:thicks at co.clackamas.or.us>) for more information.
* "Clackamas County TPEP and ADPEP are jumping right in. We are enjoying learning from each other and combining our strengths for the best prevention outcomes. This month's example is the Clackamas County Prevention Coalition (CCPC) helping with the alcohol and tobacco retailer assessment. Coalition members have volunteered to help with the assessment, which increases our capacity making it easier for us to assess all of the retailers and include all of the optional questions. Coalition members are learning a lot, it's been there is so much to see that I had taken for granted and hadn't noticed before. For example, kid friendly items right next to alcohol, cigarettes and paraphernalia are common most places we go. I now also see how alcohol associated with sports activities would appeal to kids [photo attached]...I've also learned about trends I might not have otherwise known about, like that youth are taking the tobacco out of cigars and refilling them with marijuana to make a "blunt". In fact, I didn't even know they were calling it a "blunt". A lot of us partnered up for the assessment activities and it turned out we noticed different things and had meaningful discussions about our observations...This is just a few of the eye-opening things I experienced, while encouraging others to participate in the assessment for their own learning."
Retail resource of the month: Wondering how to translate your assessments into practice? This case study<https://countertobacco.org/resources-tools/stories-from-the-field/retailer-licensing-in-edgewater-colorado/> from Edgewater, Colorado shows how Jefferson County Public Health leveraged retail assessments and other local data into passing a tobacco retail license. (Side note - CounterTobacco.org is a great resource for all things tobacco retail-related.)
Keep sending in your stories and pictures!
Best regards,
Sarah Wylie and the HPCDP Tobacco and Alcohol Retail Assessment team
