HISTORIC PROPERTY TASK FORCE TO MEET IN SALEM

Oregon*s Task Force on Historic Property will meet from noon to 3
p.m. Aug. 15 at the North Mall Office Building, 725 NE Summer St. NE, in
Salem. The meeting will be in room 124B across from the Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department headquarters.

The committee will discuss proposed changes to the state*s special
tax assessment for historic properties and work on a report to the 2009
Legislature, as required by Senate Bill 416 passed in the 2007 session.
The bill established the 12-member task force to review the tax
incentive program, which allows owners of properties listed in the
National Register of Historic Places to apply for 15-year *freezes*
on their assessed values. The program requires recipients to make
significant investments in building rehabilitation.

The meeting site is accessible to people with disabilities. 


FORT ROCK TO CELEBRATE CENTENNIAL

The Fort Rock Homesteaders Association together with the Fort Rock
Grange, Fort Rock Historical Society and the community will recognize
and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fort Rock*s first post office
on Sept. 13-14. The Fort Rock Centennial Celebration will be held in
conjunction with the annual reunion of the Fort Rock
Homesteaders.

HERITAGE TRAININGS SET FOR ONTARIO

The Oregon Heritage Programs Division of the Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department will hold a series of free training and
information sessions Sept. 25-27  at the Four Rivers Cultural Center,
676 S.W. 5th Ave., in Ontario.

There will be a general introduction to the functions and programs
offered by the division, including the historic cemetery, certified
local government, National Register of Historic Places, and grants
programs. Also, the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries will
conduct a public meeting from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 26 which includes a
representative of the Oregon Mortuary and Cemetery Board discussing
cemetery certification, fees and laws. 

The cemeteries commission will also offer a workshop on ideas and tools
for interpreting historic locations to capture heritage tourism. The
training will last from 9 a.m.-4 p.m Sept. 27. Please pre-register for

Also, the State Historic Preservation Office will offer a session
focusing on local historic preservation efforts.  Topics will include
building community support for historic preservation, how to start a
local preservation program, and listing properties and historic
districts in the National Register of Historic Places. The sessions are
free and open to the public.


STEINER CABINS TO HOST TOUR AUG. 23

The Mt. Hood Cultural Center & Museum, in cooperation with the Sandy
Historical Society will host a tour Aug. 23 of log cabins built by the
celebrated Oregon builder, Henry Steiner, around the 1930s. The tour
will depart from the Sandy Historical Center where a Steiner exhibit has
been installed.

When Steiner, a craftsman who emigrated from Germany, began making his
signature cabins, his intent was to create functional and economically
assembled homes, not idyllic cottages that seem to come right out of a
fairy tale. However, that's exactly what happened. His cabins -many of
which are dotted around the Mt. Hood area-- are precisely what one might
imagine if asked to think of how that storybook "cozy little cabin in
the woods" might appear. Over the years, Steiner's sons, Fred and John,
began helping their father with construction of the cabins.

Steiner is considered a master of the Oregon Rustic style and the tour
is designed to acquaint visitors with both this native Northwest design
as well as to offer a chance to tour wooded cabins ostensibly straight
out of a storybook.
