ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND HISTORIC HOMES WORKSHOP PLANNED

The Salem Historic Landmarks Commission and the State Historic
Preservation Office are sponsoring a free workshop on Energy Efficiency
and Historic Homes from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Pringle Park
Community Center, 606 Church St. SE, Salem.  

Topics to be covered: Do-it-Yourself or Hire someone to do it?, What do
I do with my windows?, How to save money with doing repairs? among
others.  Feel free to suggest other topics.

LIFE SAVING SERVICES FEATURED IN NEWPORT EVENTS

Speakers on life saving vessels, tours of the Coast Guard, rides on the
Victory lifeboat, and an air drop rescue are among the events scheduled
Aug. 22-23 at Yaquina Bay during Saviors of the Sea, a weekend salute to
the historic journey of the U.S. Coast Guard and its predecessor, the
U.S. Life Saving Service, at Yaquina Bay.

Timothy Dring, an expert on lifesaving vessels, and David Pinyerd, an
expert on lighthouses and the Life Saving Service, will offer short
talks and visual aids at Yaquina Bay Lighthouse every hour beginning at
11 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. Aug. 22. A portion of the film "Wreck and
Rescue of the Schooner J.H. Hartzell," a Coast Guard reenactment, will
be shown. 

Dring will offer a more comprehensive talk at 1 p.m. on life saving
boats and the Coast Guard at the Pacific Maritime & Heritage Center of
the Lincoln County Historical Society, 333 SE Bay Blvd., Newport, at 1
p.m. The Coast Guard will display a 25-foot lifesaving response boat
along with equipment and clothing used in rescue operations from 12:30
to 3 p.m., on the grounds of the Maritime Center. The film "Wreck and
Rescue of the Schooner J.H. Hartzell," will be shown at 12:30.

Dring, an authority on small vessels used by the Coast Guard and its
predecessor, the Life Saving Service, has coauthored a book on the
design history of coastal rescue craft. Pinyerd  has served as president
of the Historic Preservation League of Oregon and is also a board member
of Albany¹s Landmarks Advisory Commission.

CANNON BEACH HOUSE TOUR SET FOR SEPT. 12

On Sept. 12, several cottages in southern Cannon Beach will be open for
public viewing. The sixth-annual Cannon Beach Cottage Tour, put on by
the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum will feature houses in
Tolovana Park dating from early- to mid-20th century. A pre-tour
luncheon and lecture will be held from noon-1 p.m.at the Tolovana Inn,
3400 S. Hemlock St., The lecture features long-time resident Margaret
Doman talking about the history of Tolovana park and each cottage.

The self-guided walking tour will take place from 1-4 p.m. Tickets can

LECTURE SERIES ACCOMPANIES PRESERVATION FIELD SCHOOL

A free public evening lecture series has started at the Frank Lloyd
Wright-designed Gordon House in Silverton to accompany activities of the
Pacific Northwest Historic Preservation Field School.
 
Scholars and other experts will give talks on topics that have
significance to the work being carried out by participants of the
University of Oregon’s historic preservation
program field school, which started its daily hands-on rehabilitation
sessions at the Gordon House on Aug. 16. They will work there through
Aug. 28, and again after Sept. 13. 

Lectures will begin at 7 p.m. Driving directions are available at

Information about the lecturers and their talks will be posted at

The Pacific Northwest Historic Preservation Field School will be
conducting five one-week sessions in August and September at three
sites: the Gordon House, the historic Poultry Building at the Oregon
State Fairgrounds in Salem, and Civilian Conservation Corps era rustic
log and stone structures at Silver Falls State Park. Information on the

CULTURAL RESOURCES INSTITUTE PUBLISHES NEWSLETTER

The Northwest Cultural Resources Institute at the Fort Vancouver
National Historic Site has posted its latest newsletter online at

It features an article about the latest documentation of the McLaughlin
House in Oregon City.
