EXHIBITS OPENING IN BEND, HOOD RIVER, PORTLAND, WEST LINN

BEND: " Rock Art Perspectives: Pictographs and Petroglyphs" opens Feb. 13 at the High Desert Museum. The exhibition brings together archaeologists, photographers and Native American artists who explore the beauty and significance of early Native American art carvings and paintings in the Columbia plateau, Great Basin and across America. Rock art includes pictographs, which are drawings on stone using crushed berries, red ochre and other natural materials. Petroglyphs are images carved in stone. Artists include Lillian Pitt, Melissa Melero, Harry Fonseca and photographers David Muench, Michael Frye and Alain Briot. For more information, visit www.highdesertmuseum.org or phone 541-382-4754.

HOOD RIVER: Exhibits at the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum have changed as the organization moved this month into a 46,000-square-foot building. For more information, visit the museum at 1600 Air Museum Road or its website at http://www.waaamuseum.org/

PORTLAND:  An exhibition of art made by residents of the internment camps at Minidoka and Tule Lake will be shown with photographs taken of the two sites by Emily Hanako Momohara at the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center beginning Jan. 24. Momohara is an assistant professor of art in Cincinnati. Nearly 4,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry in Oregon were among 120,000 persons incarcerated during World War II. Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center is a Japanese American history center that preserves and shares the history and culture of Japanese Americans in Oregon. WEST LINN: "Art Contemplates Industry--The Hawley Powerhouse" is an exhibit curated by the Willamette Falls Heritage Foundation that will be at the West Linn Library gallery until Jan. 30. The exhibit includes the work of 17 artists who were granted access to the 1916 Hawley Powerhouse at Willamette Falls in to capture images of that historic structure prior to it being demolished.  The Hawley Powerhouse exhibit is the second in the "Art Contemplates Industry" series sponsored by the foundation with the cooperation of Portland General Electric. OREGON VIDEO TO BE SHOWN AT COWBOY EVENT

The Western Folklife Center will present the story of the Oregon community of Maxville history as seen through the eyes of Gwen Trice in the "Deep West Video"  portion of the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering Jan. 26-31 in Elko, Nev. RE-SCHEDULED PRESENTATION SET FOR FEB. 23

The presentation of Ellen Eisenberg, which was postponed by December storms, has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at Congregation Neveh Shalom, 2900 SW Peaceful Lane, Portland. She will talk about her new book , "The First to Cry Down Injustice? Western Jews and Japanese Removal During WWII".  It explores the range of responses from Jews in the Pacific West to the removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. TIGARD HOSTS CHAUTAUQUA ON JAN. 28

Robert Hamm will talk about "Becoming Oregon" at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Tigard Public Library, 13500 SW Hall Blvd. He will use maps, newspapers, woodcuts and photographs to illustrate Oregon's place in the national imagination. His appearance is support by the Oregon Council for the Humanities Chautauqua series.
