HISTORIC HARVESTS PLANNED IN JACKSON, YAMHILL COUNTIES

Jackson County:  The Hanley Farm picnic on from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 7
will feature a 1920s theme, horse-drawn wagon rides, music, children's
games, tours of the gardens and outbuildings, and exhibits. It will
highlight 1920s clothing in the collection of the Southern Oregon
Historical Society, and include from the era a motorcycle, other
vehicles, and photographs. The Southern Oregon Draft and Harness
Association will be also be site binding the wheat that is used to
produce Hanley Horsepower Flour with vintage, horse-drawn equipment.

Yamhill County: The Yamhill County Historical Society will use mules
and vintage farm equipment to harvest a crop of oats this weekend. Other
activities during the Harvest Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 7-8 include
kids harvesting wheat using methods more than 130 years old, making
candles, and playing old-fashion games. There will be a parade of mule
teams and tractors-- including a 1912 Peerless Steam Traction
Engine--and a display of farming equipment.  The event takes place at
the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center, 11275 SW Durham Ln., McMinnville.

1930s PHOTO TOPICS GET WIDE EXPOSURE

Exhibits and a talk on 1930s photographs in Oregon will take place this
month.

The Cannon Beach Historical Society has opened a new exhibit that will
showcase 1930s federal work programs in a six-month display of
Depression Era photography and artifacts until February. The exhibit
will feature photos by Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee and Arthur Rothstein,
along with vintage camera equipment and historical documents. The
exhibit will also showcase Civilian Conservation Corps tools and
memorabilia, as well as photos from a 1940 Works Progress Administration
tour of the Oregon coast. For more information, contact the historical

The Washington County Historical Society is exhibiting until Sept. 11
photographs that Dorothea Lange took in Oregon during the late summer
and fall of 1939 for the Farm Security Administration. For more

David Milholland and the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission have
created a film, “Slices of Cinema on Dorothea Lange and the Great
Depression” that will be shown at 7 p.m. Aug. 24 at McMenamins
Cornelius Pass Roadhouse, 4045 NW Cornelius Pass Road, Hillsboro.
Milholland and David Horowitz will lead an audience discussion of the
film. The free event is sponsored by the Oregon Encyclopedia Project.

TERRA COTTA TOURS SET FOR PORTLAND

Robert Jordan will lead two downtown Portland tours Aug. 5 and Aug. 7
to look at its architectural details and ornamentation.  The buildings
include the Wells Fargo Building (1907), the Charles Berg Building
(1930), and others. The tours are sponsored by the Architectural
Heritage Foundation.

BLOGS DISCUSS SALEM, PRESERVATION PROJECTS

The Oregon Connecting to Collections preservation project, funded by
grant to the Oregon Museums Association from the Institute for Museum
and Library Services, has created a blog. The blog is located at

The Shine on Salem 150 blog is nearing completion of its series of
posts detailing Salem in each year of its existence. The blog, written
by Virginia Green, celebrates the  sesquicentennial of the city's 1860
charter and uses photos from the Salem Public Library's Oregon Historic
Photograph Collections. It also includes image shows for six heritage
walks in Salem. The blog can be viewed at

FORT YAMHILL TOUR VIDEO PRODUCED

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has produced a pre-tour
video for Fort Yamhill State Heritage Area. The 5-minute video includes
a description of the tour as well as some of the site's history. To view
