FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION AVAILABLE

The Heritage Programs Division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will provide 1-3 fellowships to undergraduate students who are seniors and to graduate students for researching, writing and presenting a topic related to history, geography, archaeology, cultural heritage, or historic preservation in Oregon.

The Fellowship recipients will make a 20-minute presentation of their project or research findings April 8 at the Oregon Heritage Conference in Astoria.  

The purpose of the Heritage Fellowship is to encourage the thoughtful inquiry of Oregon's heritage by emerging scholars.  Many new topics remain to be pursued, and fresh perspectives on previously examined topics are needed as well in order to keep the investigation of Oregon's history fresh and relevant.  The Fellowship not only offers a financial incentive for those research efforts, it provides an opportunity for sharing the results with the Oregon heritage community through a public presentation.

HISTORIC BARNS FEATURED AT SHERMAN COUNTY MUSEUM

Sherman County Historical Museum's artist series features photographs of Sherman County barns by amateur photographer Carol MacKenzie during August.  
 
MacKenzie's photographs show twenty 100-year-old barns used for the care and feeding of draft horses and mules used to power farm machinery. Barns and sheds sheltered cattle, milk cows and hogs, as well. Some settlers built their homestead cabins and substantial barns before constructing permanent family homes. MacKenzie began to photograph barns and other interesting structures in the county in 2009. She is gathering oral histories related to the buildings.
 
The museum is located at 200 Dewey St., Moro. It is open daily 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. through October. For more information, call 541-565-3232 or visit www.shermanmuseum.org.  


COWBOYS FILM SLATED FOR PORTLAND SHOWING

The Oregon Historical Society will show the film "American Cowboys" at 2 p.m. Aug. 15. This film was written, produced and directed by Tania and Cedric Wildbill, in association with Oregon Public Broadcasting and Native American Public Telecommunications. 

"American Cowboys" is a story about Jackson Sundown, a Nez Perce Indian, who was the first Native American to win the World Saddle Bronc Championship at the 1916 Pendleton Round-Up. George Fletcher was the first African American to compete in the 1911 controversial Saddle Bronc finals for the World Title at the Pendleton Round-Up. Sundown and Fletcher were two legendary cowboys who broke the color barriers in the rodeo arena at the turn of the 20th century.

TILLAMOOK CENTER HOSTS BURN EVENT

Tillamook Forest Center hosts its "Return From the Burn" from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 14-15.

This free annual event will feature appearances by Smokey Bear, entertaining puppet shows, demonstration of a wildland fire engine, tours, and other historical exhibits and displays. LIKE FISHING? HOOK ONTO EXHIBIT IN MEDFORD

"Fishing the Rogue" is the topic this month of an exhibit at the Southern Oregon Historical Research Library in Medford this month.

Fishing has long been a popular sport in Southern Oregon.  On exhibit are historic photos of huge catches of trout, steelhead, and salmon, along with some unique styles of fishing.  Also on display is a monogrammed leather fishing rod case owned by early aviator Sealy Hall.

The library is located at 106 N. Central Ave. and is open Tuesday - Friday from 12 p.m.- 4 pm.  For more information, call (541) 858-1724.
