ORGANIZATIONS OFFERING CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

The State Historic Preservation Office and several national and
regional organizations have deadlines during the next two weeks for
conference scholarship applications.

The State Historic Preservation Office offers the Elisabeth Walton
Potter Historic Preservation Advocacy and Education Awards that provide
recipients with financial assistance to help defray travel expenses to
historic preservation-related conferences and workshops. The application
deadline is May 28. Award information and applications are available at

The American Association for State and Local History's small museums
committee offers three $500 scholarships to the AASLH annual meeting and
conference. To qualify, the applicant must work for a museum with a
budget of $250,000 or less and complete the application form at
www.aaslh.org/SmallMuseums. The application deadline is May 28. For

conference will take place Sept. 22-25 in Oklahoma City.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has a Diversity
Scholarship Program that provides financial assistance to community
leaders from diverse backgrounds to attend the National Preservation
Conference Oct. 27-30 in Austin, Texas. The program provides financial
assistance to approximately 60 community leaders from diverse
socio-economic, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds to attend.

 The website currently features a video produced by Gwen Trice of
Enterprise, who received a program scholarship last year. The
application deadline is June 1.

The Western Museums Association offers the Wanda Chin Professional
Development Support Fund for travel and registration for students,
incoming professionals and mid-career professionals. The WMA will have
its annual conference Oct. 17-20 in Portland. The conference program is

Scholarship applications have a postmark deadline of June 1.

NIKE EMPLOYEE FUND SEEKS GRANT PROPOSALS

The Nike Employee Grant Fund has been established at The Oregon
Community Foundation. Through this fund, Nike employees will work with
the foundation to
award $500,000 per year to nonprofits.

This is Nike's "backyard" program, engaging employees in aiding
nonprofits in communities where local Nike employees live - Clackamas,
Columbia, Multnomah, Washington and Yamhill counties in Oregon and Clark
County in Washington. Grants will be one-year awards, generally between
$5,000 and $20,000.

Most grants will be awarded through the lens of sport, for projects
that use sport or physical activity to leverage other community
benefits, but some grants will be awarded for projects that address
broader family and children's issues. The first applications are due

LABOR HISTORY CONFERENCE SCHEDULED IN PORTLAND

The Pacific Northwest Labor History Association will take place June
11-13 at the University of Oregon's White Stage Building in Portland.
The conference is co-sponsored by the Northwest Oregon Labor Council,
the Oregon Historical Society and the University of Oregon History
Department. The conference theme is "The Union Makes Us Strong:
Inspiration, Guidance and Hope During Hard Times." For more information,

BENTON COUNTY FEATURES WEEKEND EVENTS

Several activities are taking place May 22-23 in Benton County as part
of a coordinated Historic Preservation Month.

At 1 p.m. May 22, the Crystal Lake Cemetery will host "Stories from the
Grave," an interactive tour program exploring the cemetery. 

At 1 p.m. May 23, a one-hour walking tour will take place in the
Avery-Helm Historic District. The Avery-Helm neighborhood is Corvallis'
first National Register Historic District and includes nine full blocks
and 10 partial blocks of Corvallis' founder, Joseph C. Avery's 1845
donation land claim and subsequent plats. Meet at SW 5th & Jefferson
parking lot

At 2:30 p.m. May 23, the Atomic Ranch Homes Tour will begin at Lincoln
& NW 15th at Dixon Creek in Corvallis.  Many ranch neighborhoods like
those in Corvallis developed during the post WWII “Atomic Age,” when
housing demand for returning servicemen boomed. These homes reflect an
informal and casual life style and the auto-culture of their time.

The Benton County Historical Museum in Philomath and the Corvallis
Library also have Historic Preservation Month exhibits. For more
