KAM WAH CHUNG TO BE HIGHLIGHTED IN PORTLAND EVENTS

The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine will present "Preserving
Chinese Culture in Oregon: An Evening with Kam Wah Chung" from 6 p.m.-9
p.m. in the University of Oregon White Stag Block. This event will kick
off a seminar series at Lan Su Garden focusing on the history of the Kam
Wah Chung Heritage Site in John Day.

These events will highlight the contributions of Chinese businessman
Lung On and Chinese herbal doctor Ing “Doc” Hay who inhabited Kam
Wah Chung from 1887-1940. Built in 1876 as a trading post, On and Hay
transformed Kam Wah Chung into a social, medical and religious center
for Oregon’s Chinese community. The museum still contains artifacts,
financial records, supplies and Chinese herbs left behind by On and Hay.


College staff, faculty and students are currently helping the museum
translate, contextualize and catalog the herbs and records left behind
by On and Hay, beginning with herbal pharmacy records and prescription
notes from the 1918 flu epidemic.

People at the June 8 event will screen OPB’s Oregon Experience
program about Kam Wah Chung, meet producer/director Beth Harrington and
executive producer Nadine Jelsing, view historic photos of the original
museum, and meet Kam Wah Chung curator Christina Sweet. The event is
free and open to the public. Pre-registration is encouraged.

Lectures at Lan Su Chinese Garden will begin the following week; they
are open to the public and included in the price of admission to the
garden. Each begins at 1 p.m. Topics and dates are: "The History and
Artifacts of Kam Wah Chung" by Sweet on June 15; "Interpreting the
Medicine of Kam Wah Chung" by college staff member Beth Howlett on June
22; and "The Making of Oregon Experience: Kam Wah Chung" by Harrington

HANLEY FARM TO BEGIN SUMMER PICNICS

The Southern Oregon Historical Society will host the first of its
summer picnics from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 5  at the Hanley Farm. The event
will include food, tours, games, crafts, and exhibits. Local author
Margaret LaPlante will present the latest SOHS publication "Images of
America: Jacksonville".  Singer-songwriter Christina Duane will perform
in concert of her songs of Oregon history beginning at 2 p.m.

HISTORIC CEMETERIES GRANTS FOR 2010 AWARDED

Financial aid ranging from $400 for a Jackson County sign project to
$2,000 for marker repair projects are among the latest grants released
by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to help preserve and
interpret historic cemeteries. 

The department’s 2010 Historic Cemeteries Program grants will spread
$33,000 in state lottery dollars among 19 projects throughout the state.
This is the second of two grant cycles for the state biennium. The
grants were awarded to cemetery projects in 12 counties for marker
repair, tree care, fencing, signage, lighting, survey, training and
other projects. 

“The projects demonstrate the variety of ways people are helping
preserve historic cemeteries in their communities,” said Kuri Gill the
department's Historic Cemeteries Program coordinator. “We’re pleased
to announce these awards during May. It is a special month for
cemeteries preparing for Memorial Day events and visitors.”

The department has awarded $257,000 in historic cemetery grants since
2004, helping fund 154 projects. Proposed projects are approved by the
Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries. More information on recipients

HERITAGE AREA COALITION SEEKS COORDINATOR

The Willamette Falls Heritage Area Coalition is requesting potential
coordinators of their efforts to submit proposals. They are working to
create a national heritage area for the region defined by the Willamette
River between the mouths of the Tualatin River and the Clackamas River
to submit their qualifications. Proposals are due June 15. The complete

GROUP TO DEDICATE CEMETERY MARKER IN THE DALLES

The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society will be dedicating May 31 a
memorial stone to honor all those who are buried at the Pioneer Cemetery
in The Dalles.  For several years the society has collected donations in
order to erect a common monument inscribed with the names of all the 243
people interred in this cemetery on East Scenic Drive. That goal has now
been met.                               

The events begin at 10:15 with a veterans ceremony by The Dalles
Veterans of Foreign Wars and continues at 11 a.m. with the dedication of
the memorial stone. After the ceremony a gathering will be hosted at the
Original Courthouse 410 West 2nd Place The Dalles.  Refreshments will be
served and there will also be an opportunity to learn about the cemetery
book compiled by society member Earlene Wasser.

The original name was City Graveyard or Pioneer City Graveyard. It was
sometimes referred to as the Bigelow graveyard. W.D. Bigelow donated the
ground for the cemetery on June 14, 1860 with the first burial shortly
thereafter. This graveyard was used instead of the Indian Mission
cemetery (16th Street between Garrison and Pentland streets) after 1860.
It contains 2.12 acres of native trees and plants.

The Pioneer Cemetery which is administered by the City of The Dalles,
Historic Landmarks Commission, is located on East Scenic Drive in The
