NONPROFIT TOWN HALLS SET IN CITIES AROUND THE STATE

TUALATIN CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY
Tualatin’s will commemorate its 100-year anniversary at 2 p.m., Aug.
18, at the Winona Grange, 8340 SW Seneca St., on the actual date the
incorporation vote occurred in 1913. The event will feature voices of
key personalities of the time through a historical drama written by
Loyce Martinazzi and Sandra Carlson with a “You Are There” review of
events leading up to the election. The City of Tualatin will provide a
birthday cake provided and the Tualatin Historical Society (THS) will
introduce historic property landmark signs at over a dozen homes and
other properties identified with early Tualatin families. The signs will
present the common name given the building and the construction year.
According to Art Sasaki, THS president, “as part of the city’s
Centennial celebration, THS wants to ensure that the significance of
remaining landmarks is not forgotten; we hope this is the beginning of a
long-term effort to identify other significant legacies of bygone eras.”
The initial historic properties receiving signs include the Avery
Chicken Hatchery, 1939; Byrom House, 1878; Elmer House, 1914; Francis
House, 1885; Luster House, 1857; Richardson House, 1910; Robinson Store,
1912; Smith/Boone House, 1895; Sweek House, 1858; Wesch House, 1890;
Winona Grange No. 271, 1940; Methodist Church, 1926 and Zeke Eddy House,
1890.

SAM WEGNER NAMED WILLAMETTE HERITAGE CENTER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Willamette Heritage Center (WHC) board of directors recently named
Samuel J. Wegner as the Center’s new executive director. This will not
be his first work in Oregon. Between 1986 and 1996, he was executive
director of the Southern Oregon Historical Society in Medford. Wegner
will move to Salem this month and start his new duties on Sept. 3.
“I am very familiar with Oregon’s unique heritage and appreciate the
history and significance of the Willamette Heritage Center or Mission
Mill Museum, as I remembered it,” Wegner said. “I look forward to
playing an active role in preserving, promoting and interpreting WHC’s
mission.”
Most recently, Wegner served as executive director of the North
Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina. Earlier, he
was vice president of education and strategic planning of the National
World War II Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, and society
superintendent and state historic preservation officer of the State
Historical Society of North Dakota in Bismarck, North Dakota.
“Sam brings almost 40 years of museum experience with him,” said Ted
Stang, president of the Center’s board of directors. “We are looking
forward to him leading our board and staff in charting a new direction
for the WHC.”
Wegner succeeds Peter Booth, who resigned in December 2012 to become
executive director of a museum in Grand Junction, Colorado. John
Hawkins has been serving as interim executive director since January.
