EXCHANGE EXPLORES A CHANGE IN OREGON’S HISTORY

Are you doing research on a new topic or looking for a fresh approach

HISTORIC WINDOW PRESERVATION WORKSHOP SET FOR JUNE 28 – 29 

Join window professionals to learn the tricks of the trade while they
repair the windows of the First Methodist Church, a National Register
historic resource in downtown Salem starting at 6 p.m., June 28 and
continuing at 8 a.m., June 29. Bring your tools (putty knives, utility
knives, painting tools) and your lunch and learn how to remove a window
sash, restring pulleys, glaze windows, and other simple repairs.
Presented by the Historic Landmarks Commission through a Certified Local
Government grant from the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office,
Chris Gustafson will lead the workshop.  If you are interested in

CEMETERY DISASTER PLANNING RESOURCE AVAILABLE

The Chicora Foundation recently released “Cemetery Disaster Planning”,
which is available online. Topics include planning, actions prior to an
event and dealing with the aftermath. Visit

TECHNICAL PRESERVATION SERVICES OFFERS HISTORIC BUILDING GREEN ROOF
GUIDANCE 

The National Park Services’ Technical Preservation Services division
recently launched a new web-based resource called “Green Roofs on
Historic Buildings”. The guide includes information on green roofs and
how they are constructed, special considerations for installations on
historic structures, and guidance for meeting the “Secretary's Standards
for Rehabilitation”. Visit

CIVIL WAR ERA AND WESTWARD CONNECTIONS CONFERENCE SET FOR JULY 26 - 28

The Civil War and Westward Connections Conference will take place from
July 26 – July 28 in Oregon City.  Designed to advance and broaden the
knowledge and appreciation of the mid-19th century, the conference will
include workshops and national known speakers, including keynote speaker
Dr. Robert Sutton, Chief Historian for the National Park Service,
Carolann Schmitt and Susan Hughes. Visit www.civilwarconference.com for

NEWPORT’S PACIFIC MARITIME AND HERITAGE CENTER SET TO OPEN JUNE 28

Binnacles, boat models, ship’s wheels, maritime art, vintage
surfboards, and larger-than-life photographs fill the public spaces of
the Lincoln County Historical Society’s (LCHS) Pacific Maritime and
Heritage Center, which will open at 11 a.m., June 28 at 333 SE Bay Blvd.
in Newport. 

The original occupant of the site, a home built in 1890 by Dr. James
and Elizabeth Bayley, burned in 1923, leaving only the foundation and
chimney. World War I hero General Ulysses Grant McAlexander built a new
home on the site in 1925, which underwent extensive remodeling and
expansion during the 1970s and early 1980s to become Smuggler’s Cove, a
popular restaurant and nightclub, and later Gracie’s – also a restaurant
and entertainment spot. LCHS acquired the property in 2004 and began
renovating the impressive 28,000 square foot building. With the main
floor finished and scheduled to open, additional renovation plans
include a multi-purpose theater, a conference center, and additional
exhibits as funds become available.

Visitors will experience a unique structure with high ceilings and more
than 50 windows overlooking Newport’s bay front at Port Dock 5. The main
public area contains maritime objects loaned by members of the community
in an exhibit titled “Ship to Shore: Objects of a Maritime Community.”
Other attractions include an AIS System antenna, which identifies and
tracks marine traffic in real time and a Hands-On History area where
children can handle objects and create their own exhibits. Photographs
from the LCHS collection illustrate early life on the area waterways. 

The Heritage Center will be open 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday through

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON COOS HISTORICAL AND MARITIME CENTER, COOS BAY

The Coos County Historical Society (CCHS) will soon begin construction
on its new bayfront Coos Historical and Maritime Center, and plaza. The
project, more than 9 years in the making, creates a 13,000 square foot
cultural, social and educational hub on the site of a former
log-shipping terminal next to Highway 101.  A "groundbreaking ceremony"
will take place in early August, with grand opening expected in fall
2014.  

The Center is part of a broader regional strategy for economic recovery
and renewal in this formerly timber-dependent region.  For further
