PHOTO CONTEST CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF OREGON’S OPEN BEACHES

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is holding a photo
contest to celebrate 100 years of Oregon’s public shore (
http://oregonstateparks.wordpress.com/2013/02/13/celebrating-100-years-of-oregons-public-shore/
)! The contest is open to non-professional photographers 18 years and
older. New or historic photos should feature people involved in
recreation activities on the Oregon coast. Images must be original scans
or digital photos of at least 2 MB in size saved in .jpg or .jpeg
format. Submitting your photo means you’ve received permission from all
of the subjects to display their image online and you have documented
release from the parents or guardians of any minors. It also means that
you give OPRD the rights to reproduce and adapt your images in future
materials.
The contest begins July 1 and runs for the entire month. OPRD welcomes
multiple entries. The winner will be the “people’s choice,” or the photo
with the most votes awarded by the public through online voting during
the first two weeks of August. OPRD will display the top photo, as well
as three runner-ups/honorable mentions at the 2013 Oregon State Fair (

ODOT’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY FEATURED ON EXCHANGE

HERITAGE BULLETIN PROVIDES KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL TOURIST DESTINATIONS

Word of mouth is one of the strongest reasons people visit museums.

PHILOMATH’S INDEPENDENT SCHOOL LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER

The Independent School in Philomath is among Oregon’s latest entries in
the National Register of Historic Places. The school is significant for
the role it played in the educational development in this rural Benton
County community from 1919 to 1952. Constructed as a one-room school
house in 1919 by Fred H. Seedenburg on land donated for the school in
1918 by Ernest and Anna Seehafer, the school, located three miles south
of Philomath, originally resided in School District 19.  

The one-story, wood-frame building has the characteristics of a
Craftsman bungalow style residence, including front-facing gables, knee
brackets, and a broad front porch.  An addition, constructed in the
early 1950s, made the property more usable by the community.  The
schoolhouse continues to play an important role in the community today,
serving as the Independent Community Club.   

Oregon’s State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation recommended
the building’s nomination.  Independent School joins five other
properties in Philomath and over 100 properties in Benton County listed
in the National Register, maintained by the National Park Service under
the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Learn

North Bend: The Coos County Historical Society is seeking an
enterprising, imaginative, and multitalented individual to become
executive director of its history museum.  The executive director will
conduct the work of the Society and its facilities.  Applicants must
possess organizational and financial management expertise; demonstrate
positive and professional public relations skills, and a record of
successful fundraising.  This job also requires experience with exhibit
design, strategic planning, and staff development.  Excellent

Astoria: The Columbia River Maritime Museum is search for a highly
creative, dynamic and energetic candidate who loves working with people,
is interested in museums and has stellar communication and research
skills for the position of Field Educator. The successful candidate will
develop and present educational programming for elementary schools in
five counties during the school year. This position provides unique
interactive, memorable experiences in the museum during summer and
school vacations for museum visitors of all ages. Utilizing museum
resources the Field Educator plans, coordinates, and leads hands-on
informal learning summer day camp sessions. The employee assists with
developing educational materials and special events. The position works

Eugene: The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, located on the University
of Oregon campus, is seeking a Chief Preparator to oversee and
participate in all aspects of installation of the permanent collection
and exhibitions in the galleries. The successful candidate will
collaborate with curators/directors in developing exhibition designs,
layout, installation production planning schedules, signage, and other
exhibition treatments using the museum’s database and online planning
and collaboration tools.  Desired skills and knowledge include a
demonstrated proficiency in handling works of art in a wide variety of
media, including painting, sculpture, textiles, works on paper,
ceramics, metalwork, glass, stone, and new media, as well as familiarity
with the fabrication of exhibition/display furniture and mounts required
by such art.  An undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year
college or university is required, in a related field is strongly
preferred.  At least five years’ progressively responsible experience in
handling and installation of art required, experience with permanent
collections and exhibition preparation in an art museum is strongly
