TILLAMOOK BECOMES OREGON MAIN STREET TRANSFORMING DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY


Oregon Main Street has accepted the Tillamook Revitalization Association for inclusion at the Transforming Downtown level. Communities participating at this level have a high degree of commitment to implementing a downtown revitalization program using the Main Street Approach®. The Main Street Approach® is a comprehensive downtown revitalization program that uses historic preservation as one of its most important tools. It is a practical program that helps communities build on their unique assets.

Sheri Stuart, Oregon Main Street coordinator, has seen increased interest in building a comprehensive downtown revitalization effort using the Main Street model and a renewed awareness of the link between local heritage and sustainable economic development across the state. Currently, there are 91 communities participating in one of the four levels of the Oregon Main Street Network: Performing Main Street, Transforming Downtown, Exploring Main Street, and Affiliate. While not a pre-requisite for acceptance at the Transforming Downtown level, Tillamook had previously participated at the Exploring Downtown level. NEW HERITAGE BULLETIN OFFERS TIPS FOR GROUP VISITS TO CEMETERIES

Coordinating group visits requires planning, and visits to a cemetery are no exception. A new technical bulletin published by Oregon Heritage offers helpful tips for planning such an event in time for summer activities. Heritage Bulletin 25: Cemetery Visits with Groups<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/docs/Heritage_Bulletins/HB_25_Cemetery_Visits.pdf> provides a checklist of items to review prior to and observe during your visit.  Visit the Oregon Heritage website to read and download the new bulletin, and while you’re there, take a moment to review the other available bulletins.


NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2014 DEMURO AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PRESERVATION


Nominations are open for the 2014 DeMuro Award for Excellence in Preservation, Reuse and Community Revitalization. Restore Oregon will accept nominations through Aug.11; self-nominations are welcome.

This annual award serves to spotlight and celebrate rehabilitation and compatible infill projects across Oregon, which exemplify exceptional creativity, quality, and community impact, and to share the lessons learned. Restore Oregon will profile case studies of the winning projects on its website<http://restoreoregon.org/> and in other materials for the purpose of sharing best practices.

The panel of judges will include representatives from the architectural and preservation communities. Recipients will receive their awards at Restore Oregon’s Restoration Celebration on Nov. 5 at the Sentinel (Governor) Hotel in Portland. WILLAMETTE HERITAGE CENTER SEEKS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR



The Willamette Heritage Center (WHC) is seeking an experienced professional to serve as its director of development. Reporting to the executive director, the director of development will be responsible for planning, developing, and executing an effective development program. Responsibilities will include, among other duties, collaboration with the executive director to establish and build relationships with prospective donors and sponsors; coordinating grant production and other funding opportunities; fund raising presentations and donor appeals; and oversight of the membership program and members-only events. Review of applications will begin August 15, 2014 and will continue until position is filled.



Qualified candidates will have at least five years’ experience in a development role in a museum or other not-for-profit or an educational institution. Successful candidates will also have experience working with board members, memberships, patrons and community leaders; experience in securing support from diverse funding sources (individuals, foundations and businesses); demonstrated success in cultivating, soliciting and securing annual operating support and gifts; and experience in developing grant and sponsorship proposals for funding from individuals, businesses, foundations and government agencies. Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree is preferred.
