CANNON BEACH SANDCASTLE CONTEST DESIGNATED AS NEWEST HERITAGE TRADITION

Cannon Beach’s annual Sandcastle Contest is the newest Oregon Heritage Traditions designated by the Oregon Heritage Commission. The Sandcastle Contest joins other Heritage Traditions, including the Oregon State Fair, the Pendleton Round-Up, the Astoria Regatta and the Linn County Pioneer Picnic.

“The Heritage Commission wants to recognize those traditions that have helped define the state,” said David Lewis, the commission’s chair and historian for the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde. “They are distinguished events that are part of our heritage as Oregonians.”

A tsunami generated by an Alaskan earthquake in March 1964 destroyed Cannon Beach’s main bridge, effectively stranding all of the residents.  As a result, several Cannon Beach residents came up with the idea for the sandcastle contest as a way to boost the town’s spirits.  The first contest took place in August 1964. It now attracts 10,000-15,000 visitors annually.  For the 50th anniversary celebration, Cannon Beach has organized three days of activities with the main event – the sandcastle contest – taking place on June 21.

 “The Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce is proud of receiving this designation from the commission,” said Sandcastle Contest committee chair Debbie Nelson. “It honors the work of thousands of Cannon Beach residents during the past 50 years, and the creativity of hundreds of sand artists. This is a hometown tradition that all of Oregon can take part in and creates family memories that last a lifetime.”

An Oregon Heritage Tradition must have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years, demonstrate a public profile and reputation that distinguishes it from more routine events, and add to the livability and identity of the state.


ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION TO MEET IN INDEPENDENCE

Oregon’s State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (SACHP) will consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places in a two-day meeting on June 12 and 13 at the Independence Event Center, Independence Civic Center (bottom floor), 555 S. Main St., Independence. The public meeting will begin at 1:15 p.m. on June 12 and 9:00 a.m. on June 13.

The Committee will review proposed nominations for properties in Cornucopia, Salem, Portland, Lostine, Beaverton, and unincorporated Douglas and Jefferson Counties. The Committee will also consider the removal of the John Baxter House in Dayton from the National Register and the expansion of the previously-listed Siskiyou Smokejumper Base historic district in Cave Junction. SACHP forwards nominations recommended for listing in the National Register by the SACHP are forwarded to the National Park Service, which maintains the Register under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Members of the Committee hold credentials in many historic preservation-related fields.

DIGITAL DIRECTIONS SUBJECT OF JULY CONFERENCE IN PORTLAND

Digital Directions: Fundamentals of Creating and Managing Digital Collections will take place July 21 – 23 at the World Trade Center, 25 SW Salmon St., 2WTC, Portland. Presented by the Northeast Document Conservation Center and Co-Sponsored by the Portland Art Museum, this conference will feature instruction on basics and best practices for creating good digital objects, collections, and initiatives.

Administrators and staff from libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and other collections-holding organizations, corporate archivists and government records managers are all encouraged to attend. The conference will benefit anyone eager to learn about digitization basics and planning and managing digital projects. Conference planners have created sessions at the beginning level of digital knowledge, and for intermediate-level participants who want to keep up with current trends, evolving standards and best practices.
