INVIGORATED WORK OF PROGRESS ON EXCHANGE

Elizabeth Walton Potter Preservation Scholarship recipient Alana Garner, of the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association, recently attended the National Main Street Conference in Detroit, MI. APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR ELISABETH WALTON POTTER RESEARCH AWARD

The Marion Dean Ross Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians is inviting applications for the 2014 Elisabeth Walton Potter Research Award. The application deadline is July 31. Awards assist research that furthers awareness and knowledge of architectural heritage in the Pacific Northwest.

OSU TO HOLD ARCHAEOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL AT CHAMPOEG

Oregon State University will hold its annual summer archaeology field school at the old town site of Champoeg along the banks of the Willamette River and southeast of Newberg during July and August. Visitors to Champoeg (located at 8239 Champoeg Rd. NE, Saint Paul) will have the opportunity to participate in ranger-led tours of the excavations at the Robert Newell dig site during the six-week field school. Tours will begin at 10 a.m., taking place July 7 – Aug. 15, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and lasting for approximately an hour-and-a-half.

Students will excavate the original cabin, which housed several prominent people to Oregon’s early history. It is also the site of the first American farm west of the Rocky Mountains and home to John Ball. Robert Newell later purchased the land and used a portion of it to lay out the eastern section of the town that became Champoeg. Each day, students will conduct excavation work; recover, clean and catalog artifacts that help tell the story of early settlement of one of Oregon’s pioneering communities and a thriving commercial hub.

SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR SEEKS 2014 HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD NOMINATIONS

Section 110(h) of the National Historic Preservation Act directs the Secretary of the Interior to establish an annual award program to recognize the outstanding contributions in the area of historic preservation. The award recognizes special achievements by employees of Federal, state, tribal, and local preservation programs who have made outstanding contributions to the preservation of historic places. Nominees must be individuals whose contributions surpass the expected scope of their position, and whose creativity and expertise have significantly fostered the overall goals of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Established as a Cabinet-level of recognition through a statutory mandate, the Secretary’s award distinguishes itself from other historic preservation award programs by focusing on the accomplishments of individual employees and not on programs or projects; and its recognition of employee contributions at multiple levels of government.

Current officers and employees of Federal Preservation Offices, State Historic Preservation Offices, Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, and Certified Local Governments are eligible for the award. Employees of the National Park Service are not eligible for this award.

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE SEEKS COMMENTS ON LGBT INITIATIVE

METADATATHON TO TAKE PLACE JULY 19 IN PORTLAND

The Pacific Northwest Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) will hold a Metadatathon from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., July 19 at the University of Oregon’s Portland campus, in the White Stag building, 70 NW Couch St. It’s like a “hackathon” only it's harder to say . . . and it's for metadata! Participants will clean up metadata and become familiar with learning tools and scripts to help automate this process. Those who attend will also hear from DPLA experts about how metadata affects end users and their ability to do cool things with collection materials.

DPLA invites anyone interested in good metadata practices to attend, but especially encourages archivists and special collections librarians, metadata librarians, and developers. METAL FEST 2014 SET FOR JULY 19 IN ASTORIA

Local and regional metal arts practitioners, Clatsop Community College and the Fort George Brewery and Public House are collaborating to produce Astoria’s first Metal Fest event from noon – 9 p.m., July 19, at the Fort George Lovell Showroom and Brewery, 1483 Duane St., Astoria.

The festival will highlight the heritage of metal artists from throughout the Pacific Northwest and a diverse range of techniques including blacksmithing, bladesmithing, and fabricating in metal. Participating artists include: Vern Wilson, sculptor; Lynn Gledhill, President of the Northwest Blacksmith Association; Mike Neely, Mark Moshofski and David Curl, professional blacksmiths and more.

CULTURAL TRUST SEEKS MANAGER

The Oregon Business Development Department and Oregon Arts Commission are seeking an individual who will be responsible for the management and operations of the Cultural Trust. The successful candidate will manage fund development and planning, be responsible for grants program oversight and management, the planning, implementation and promotion of annual fund development efforts and coordination with other staff on county and tribal cultural coalition efforts.  The Cultural Trust Manager is the primary fundraiser for the Cultural Trust and coordinates outreach to public, cultural organizations and others.  The position reports to the Executive Director of the Oregon Arts Commission.
