GUSHARD RETURNS TO OREGON AFTER HAWAI’I STINT

Mike Gushard joined Oregon Heritage this week as the heritage outreach specialist.

He previously worked in Honolulu where he was the Architecture Branch Chief at the Hawai’i State Historic Preservation Office. In this role he was responsible for managing all professional staff and programs related to above-ground cultural resources in the islands.

Before leaving for Hawai’i, Gushard lived here in the Northwest, graduating from high school in Salem and attending both undergrad and graduate school at the University of Oregon.

In his free time, Gushard is president of DoCoMoMo-Hawai’i, the Pacific Island chapter of an international non-profit dedicated to the preservation and documentation of modern art and architecture. He is also a aboard member of the Recent Past Preservation Network, a national preservation advocacy.

HIGHWAY ADVISORY COMMITTEE SET TO MEET IN THE DALLES SEPT. 30

The Historic Columbia River Highway Advisory Committee will meet at 10 a.m., Sept. 30 at The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles. Agenda highlights include a presentation on the Gorge Bicycling Economic Study, a preview of the proposed Summit Creek Viaduct along the Historic Highway State Trail, and a discussion regarding a future forest management plan along the Historic Highway Trail Corridor.

GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP SCHEDULED FOR OCT. 6 – 8 AT PSU

A grant writing workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Oct. 6 – 8 at University Place, Room Elowah Falls, Portland State University, 310 SW Lincoln St., Portland. The workshop offers information about grant procurement, identifying potential funding sources, and methods for writing winning grant proposal. CYCLE OREGON ACCEPTING GRANT PROPOSALS THROUGH OCT. 31

Cycle Oregon is accepting grant proposals in several categories, including historic preservation. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m., Oct. 31. Cycle Oregon will notify grant recipients no later than mid-February 2015. To be eligible for a grant, the organization must be a 501(c)3 or a government agency in Oregon. Applicants should submit a completed grant application form and project description (no more than three pages) that includes the project / program goals; timeline; partnerships (if applicable) and budget. Include your IRS letter verifying your 501(c)3 status if not a governmental organization.

LETTERS OF INTEREST FOR OREGON HUMANITIES PUBLIC PROGRAM GRANTS DUE OCT. 31

Oregon Humanities (OH) encourages nonprofits to submit letters of interest for its 2015 Public Program Grants by no later than Oct. 31 for public programs beginning after April 1, 2015. Applicants must apply using the OH online system.

Potential applicants must submit Letters of Interest via OH's online system no later than October 31, 2014.

In the past year, Oregon Humanities Public Program Grants funded programs that examined topics such as the effects of tribal termination, investigated the history of the Oregon railways, and explored the experience of black tradeswomen. “BUILDING AND ENERGY CODES FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS” COURSE OFFERED OCT. 22

Astoria’s building official Jack Applegate will teach “Solving the Puzzle: Modern Building and Energy Codes for Historic Buildings” from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Oct. 22 during the Oregon Building Officials Association Fall Educational Institute in Wilsonville. The course offers continuing education credits for all building safety professionals.

OREGON MUSEUMS RECEIVE IMLS GRANT FUNDING

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) recently announced new grants for 211 museum projects, totaling $25,576,662, through its highly competitive Museums for America and National Leadership Grants for Museums programs. Oregon museums are among the recipients.

The Oregon Historical Society (OHS) received funding to develop a Learning Portal with its partners, Oregon Black Pioneers, Oregon Jewish Museum, Oregon Nikkei Endowment, and Southern Oregon Historical Society. The Learning Portal space will fulfill two distinct functions: (1) a hands-on, interactive learning area featuring artifacts, stories, digital content, and experiential learning activities that appeal to the motivations and needs of younger guests and families; and (2) a classroom for OHS' education staff to use with visiting school groups for interactive learning workshops that augment the current docent-led tours. The project will present opportunities within the museum for intercultural dialogue and collaborative interpretation that promotes a more holistic exploration of Oregon's shared historical story. OHS will evaluate the project through periodic surveys, at least two focus groups, teacher evaluations, visitor exit surveys, and visitor interviews.

IMLS funding received by the Portland Art Museum will help establish a new exhibition and interpretation gallery to foster a deep understanding of Native American art and artists in the contemporary world. The gallery will bridge the gap between museums and the large local Native American community through meaningful engagement. The museum will work with an advisory committee of Native community leaders and artists to develop e a robust schedule of programs and exhibitions including art demonstrations, community conversations, and artist talks. The project will encourage community participation with programming focused on Native American art and artistic practice from the perspectives of Native Americans and create a space of community engagement that also encourages deep thinking about contemporary issues in Native American culture.

Overall, IMLS provided $30,062,585 in support to 263 projects in 2014. Museums of all types benefit from IMLS funding, including art, science, aquariums, children’s and history.
