OREGON HISTORY CHRONICLED THROUGH ITS BUILDINGS ON NEW WEBSITE

Oregon’s architectural history is now as close as your smartphone, thanks to collaborative efforts between library specialists at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University.  The two schools created a web-based database containing thousands of photos of historic buildings around the state. Ed Teague, head of the Architecture and Allied Arts library for UO Libraries, worked on the project with colleagues from OSU. He said it’s a way for people to get in touch with their community’s history through its buildings.

“People’s connection to history is often through the built environment,” he told the newspaper.

TRUST GRANTS RECORD $2.6 MILLION TO PARTNERS, COALITIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Statewide cultural organizations will receive a record $2.6 million in grants from the Oregon Cultural Trust in fiscal year 2015-16, up a full 30 percent over last year and surpassing $2 million for the first time. The dramatic increase in funding came as a result of a record fundraising year and a new distribution formula approved by the Oregon legislature.

The new distribution formula, put in place through the passage of Senate Bill 441, allows the Trust to allocate a larger percentage of the funds it raises to grant making and administration. The Trust raised a record $4.4 million in fiscal year 2014-15, through donor participation in the cultural tax credit, allowing it to allocate $2.6 million to statewide grants. AMIA TO OFFER WEBINAR SERIES IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER

Beginning in September, the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) will offer three webinar series intended to further education in the archival moving image profession, as well as introduce these topics to the broader libraries and archives community.

Series 1, titled Introduction to Digital Formats and Storage, will focus on digital file formats, storage and transfer workflows.  The series begins Sept. 15 and runs through Oct. 20.

Best Practices for Personal Audiovisual Collections is the title of Series 2.  Intended for families and individuals with audiovisual collections they wish to preserve, the two-webinar-series includes one overview session and one session on digitization.  The webinars will be Sept. 29 and Oct. 1.

Directed to small institutions with audiovisual collections and limited staff, Series 3, Best Practices for Small Audiovisual Archives, includes one overview session and one session on digitization.  The webinars will take place Oct. 6 and Oct. 8.

ALHFAM WESTERN REGION CONFERENCE SET FOR SEPT. 23 – 26 IN MCMINNVILLE

The Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) will hold their 2015 Western Region Conference Sept. 23 – 26 at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center, with the theme Partnering for the Future. The conference will include a field trip to Willamette Heritage Center in Salem and a vintage baseball game. NPS SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARDS

The National Park Service is accepting nominations for the Secretary of the Interior’s 2015 Historic Preservation Awards. The award recognizes special achievements by employees of Federal, state, tribal, and local preservation programs who have made outstanding contributions to the preservation of historic places. Nominees must be individuals whose contributions surpass the expected scope of their position, and whose creativity and expertise have significantly fostered the overall goals of the National Historic Preservation Act. LEWIS AND CLARK COLLEGE SEEKS HEAD OF SPECIAL COLLECTIONS/COLLEGE ARCHIVIST

Lewis and Clark College invites applications for the Head of Special Collections and College Archivist at the Aubrey R. Watzek Library. This leadership position will offer opportunities for professional growth and advancement to the successful candidate, who will oversee special collections and archives including the supervision of departmental staff. As the college archivist they will manage archival collections to meet institutional needs and comply with records retention policies. They will act as a steward of signature collections including the William Stafford Archive and the Literature of Lewis and Clark Expedition. They will develop unique collections that align with College interests by collecting, processing, organizing, preserving, and making accessible collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives, photographs, digital files, and other rare and special materials. They will lead programming, pedagogy, and outreach related to the collections within the College and beyond and will support teaching and scholarship at the College by organizing collaborative initiatives with faculty that involve collection-building, research, digital scholarship, exhibits, and book arts.
