ARCHAEOLOGISTS HEAD BACK TO FORT ROCK WITH UPDATED RESEARCH TECHNIQUES

A team of archaeologists from three universities, including scientists from the UO's Museum of Natural and Cultural History<http://natural-history.uoregon.edu/>, is headed back to Fort Rock Cave, where in 1938 the UO's Luther Cressman discovered the oldest known footwear in the world<http://pages.uoregon.edu/connolly/FRsandals.htm>. Scheduled for Aug. 31-Sept. 4, the archaeologists will follow up on Cressman's investigations.

Cressman discovered the sandals beneath a layer of volcanic ash produced by the 7600-year-old eruption of Mt. Mazama - the same eruption that created Crater Lake. The age of the sandals was confirmed in the 1950s through radiocarbon dating. In 1966, Cressman returned to the site with graduate student Stephen Bedwell who uncovered a hearth in Pleistocene (Ice Age) gravels. Charcoal from the fire pit was radiocarbon dated to roughly 15,800 years before present, the oldest reputed hearth in Oregon.

The goal, says Tom Connolly, project leader and director of the museum's archaeological research program<http://natural-history.uoregon.edu/research/archaeological-research>, is to explore the cave with modern techniques that might provide detailed new information about very old artifacts. The excavation will focus on the chronology and dating of the site deposits, and the collection of new samples for analysis.

Limited public access to the site will be provided by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) in partnership with UO. If interested in visiting Fort Rock Cave during the archaeological excavation, please contact OPRD staff at 541-923-7551 x21 to make arrangements. Fort Rock Cave became part of the OPRD system in 2000 and is accessible only by guided tour.


STIPEND AVAILABLE FOR COLLECTIONS CARE WORKSHOP

Stipends are available for the Balboa Art Conservation Center (BACC) two-day workshop series designed for institutions with material-based collections. The workshops will take place Sept. 23 – 24 in Eugene. The deadline for submitting a stipend request is Sept. 1.

Staff, volunteers, and students involved in collections care stewardship, policy making, and exhibition development and installation, are encouraged to attend.  BACC is offering two workshops per day to allow participants to select the training topics appropriate to their needs. The Focus on Collections Care workshops offered in Eugene include      Care of Collections: Metal Objects;  Disaster Recovery for Wet Collections: The First 24-48 Hours; Care of Collections: Paper; and Preservation: Policies, Plans and Procedures for Small Museums.

ODOT ARCHAEOLOGIST AND TRIBAL LIAISON POSITION OPEN

ODOT Technical Services has an open competitive opportunity for a limited duration Environmental Program Coordinator 2 (Archaeologist & Tribal Liaison) position located in Salem.
