OREGON MAIN STREET RECOGNIZES 19 INDIVIDUALS & PROJECTS DURINGS ITS EXCELLENCE IN DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION AWARDS

Oregon Main Street announced its 2016 "Excellence in Downtown Revitalization" award winners at the Evening of Excellence Celebration on Sept. 15 in Astoria, Oregon.

The nineteen projects, businesses, & individuals honored are:

"We are very pleased to recognize the outstanding individuals, businesses, and projects in communities participating in the Oregon Main Street Network," said Sheri Stuart, state coordinator, Oregon Main Street. "They represent some of the hard work, creativity, and investment happening across the state to strengthen and revitalize our historic downtowns."

The wide range of awards is reflective of the comprehensive Four-Point Approach® to downtown revitalization developed by the National Main Street Center. This model is used by the communities participating in the three-tier Main Street Track of Oregon Main Street Network. From 2010 to 2015, communities participating in the Performing Main Street and Transforming Downtown levels of the Network have seen $62,943,871 in private building improvement projects, $75,088,333 in public projects, 863 private rehab projects, 468 net new businesses, and 2,244 net new jobs.

OREGON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION REPORT FOCUSES ON LATINOS IN OREGON

OREGON ARCHAEOLOGY CELEBRATION FEATURES SEVERAL EVENTS ACROSS OREGON

This year's Oregon Archaeology Celebration focuses on the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), which turns 50 years old on October 15, 2016. Events across Oregon will feature sites and topics of archaeological significance and all are encouraged to attend and learn more about Oregon's heritage. Events will run September-December 2016. OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY DIRECTOR RETIRES

After fourteen years of service to the Oregon Historical Society, Library Director Geoff Wexler retired on August 25. OHS Executive Directory Kerry Tymchuk named Library Deputy Director Shawna Gandy as Interim Library Director, overseeing the Society's Research Library staff of thirteen.

"One of the best decisions I made early on in my directorship was naming Geoff Wexler the Director of the Research Library," said OHS Executive Director Kerry Tymchuk. "His expert leadership has been critical to expanding the library's services and archival capacity. It has been a pleasure working closely with him, and while he will be sorely missed, we wish him the best in his retirement, and I am confident that the library will continue to be led with capable hands with Shawna Gandy at the helm."

During his tenure at the Oregon Historical Society, Wexler worked as Senior Archivist before being appointed Library Director in 2011. Under his direction, the Society expanded public research hours from twelve to thirty-two per week, increased staffing, greatly enhanced access to OHS manuscript collections, and initiated ongoing efforts to improve access to the oral history collection, among many other projects. He lent a special touch to many exhibits and public presentations and become known as a knowledgeable resource for Oregon history.

Shawna Gandy has worked at the Oregon Historical Society since 1996. During her tenure at the Oregon Historical Society, Gandy has served in many capacities in the library, delving into exhibit research, reference, education, preservation, and collections management. She currently spearheads the OHS Digital Vault Project and associated digitization programs to enhance the stewardship of the library's digital materials and create wider public access to OHS Digital Collections.

ASTORIA DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT ASSOCIATION SEEKS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Astoria Downtown Historic District Association is seeking an executive director to coordinate downtown revitalization activities using the Main Street 4-Point Approach®. Applicant should have excellent organizational, communication and writing skills, as well as public relations experience, marketing experience, managerial capacity, and a strong administrative background. Basic computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Previous nonprofit experience a plus, with demonstrated ability in the areas of project management, special event planning, small business development, and volunteer recruitment and management. Position requires a dynamic, outgoing team player with demonstrated ability to multi-task and work effectively in an independent environment. The executive director will report to the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association board of directors. High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree preferred, but experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Salary commensurate with experience.
