OREGON COMMISSION ON HISTORIC CEMETERIES

The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries will meet at 1 p.m. October 14. The commission will visit the Croxton Cemetery at 10 a.m. A public business meeting will begin at 1 p.m.  at the Josephine County Historical Society Museum and Library, 512 SW 5th Street, Grants Pass. Agenda items will include cemetery ownership, historic cemetery grant program, current projects and upcoming plans. The commission will invite public comments. State law established the seven-member Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries to maintain a listing of all historic cemeteries and gravesites in Oregon; promote public education on the significance of historic cemeteries; and obtain financial and technical assistance for restoring, improving and maintaining their appearances.

OREGON HERITAGE COMMISSION MEETING OCT 16-17

On October 16, Commissioners will gather at 12:30 p.m. to tour heritage efforts including Cottage Grove Main Street, Cottage Grove Armory, Cottage Grove Museum, Chambers Bridge and the McFarland Cemetery.

On October 17, a public business meeting will begin at 9 a.m. Its agenda includes review and discussion of the several designation programs, grant programs, the Oregon Preservation Plan, and the Connecting to Collections project.

The Heritage Commission is comprised of nine people representing Oregon's heritage and geographical diversity who have been appointed by the Governor. There are nine advisory representatives from state agencies and statewide organizations. The mission of the Oregon Heritage Commission is to secure, sustain, and enhance Oregon's heritage by ensuring coordination of heritage initiatives by public and private organizations; advocacy on its behalf; education of the public about its extent and value; and promotion and celebration of its diversity. UBC ONLINE WORKSHOP, BEST PRACTICES IN MUSEUM GOVERNANCE, STARTS OCT 11

Opportunity to register for the new online professional development workshop Best Practices in Museum Governance and Strategic Planning<https://cstudies.ubc.ca/courses/online-workshop-best-practices-museum-governance-strategic-planning/uc035> offered by the international University of British Columbia (UBC) Centre for Cultural Planning and Development. This workshop can be taken individually for professional development, or applied to the UBC Certificate in Cultural Planning - an international professional learning program delivered 100% online.

Gain a deeper understanding of how to create and implement a multi-year strategic plan, including ways museum administrators can work with key stakeholders to create a compelling and practical vision, mission statements, and strategic goals. Also learn how to create and support a successful non-profit governance structure. Discussions focus on how to: identify and recruit board members, create a healthy committee structure, define and set term limits, involve board members in the strategic planning process, and develop a leadership succession plan.

LAKE OSWEGO-TIGARD WATER PARTNERSHIP WINS AWARD FOR TREATMENT OF CULTURAL RESOURCES

At the 22nd annual meeting of the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA) in Palm Springs, California, the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Partnership was given a national award for outstanding accomplishments relating to cultural resources and Tribal outreach.  The award was accepted by Joel Komarek, who serves as the Project Director for the City of Lake Oswego, and Terry Buchholz, owner of Integrated Water Solutions, LLC, who facilitates permitting for the water project.  Archaeological Investigations Northwest, Inc. (AINW), conducted the archaeological and cultural resource study for the Partnership.

The Partnership is constructing new drinking water infrastructure for the cities of Lake Oswego and Tigard.  AINW conducted archaeological and historical studies for the project and identified ancient Native American artifacts dating back more than 11,000 years.  The ACRA award recognized the Partnership's communication and collaboration with local Tribes, which resulted in the installation of the sculpture "The Man from Kosh-huk-shix" in George Rogers Park.  The sculpture, created by artist Travis Stewart of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, pays tribute to Grand Ronde ancestors.  The award also acknowledged the Partnership's support of scientific analyses of artifacts recovered during archaeological investigations for the water project, and the dissemination of the results of these analyses to the public and other archaeologists.
